Raspberry Pi issue

I bought the starter package, ( R-pi device, case, heat sinks, memory card, power adapter) powered it up, installed the recommended software to memory card. All seems as it should on the screen. When I attached a cat5 cable to my router (Cisco RV220) I lost all connectivity on the network. No more device lights on the router. Removed the R-pi and the situation remains. Now it seems my router is toast. Yes, yes, I tried re-seting the the rounter, swapped cables, verified signal on the cable modem. Nada. Backup router, same thing happened. VERY disappointed. Third router (not risking plugging in R-pi) all is well... except for two dead routers.

Wow, I knew the Raspberry pi is pretty badly designed (check out my blogpost here about the Rpi 2 design-fails) but to toast two routers?! Ethernet inputs (on the router side) are usually quite well protected against things like over voltage, ESD, short circuits etc. It would be interesting to open the routers up and see/measure what happened.

Did you happen to be trying out the R-pi and routers during a heavy thunderstorm?

Highly doubt the 'Pi was responsible here. There is transformer isolation at both ends. Sounds like something very extreme/unusual in the setup, do you have a photo? That router is end-of-sale but still has support provided you have a support contract - what does the manufacturer say? You could request a root cause analysis.
