Webinar. What Webinar?

Former Member
Former Member over 13 years ago

Well I have to say the Webinar was a bit of a disaster for me. I registered to attend and got email acceptance on 23/3 and spent an hour trying to get in no joy so many pitfalls. Really fed up. Yes I tried different browsers. image

Sad me. No Pi no webinar no CE mark yet. Oh well sits back and waits some more.

One day my parts will come. image

    Ray,

They plan to make the recording available on this site.

You didn't miss much.  Eben was asked about progress on

compliance testing, but said an answer would come later.

So not much in the way of new information.

I'm right there with you Ray.  I tried for over an hour and the only thing I got was the Element14 server was down.

Very disappointing.  I hope the end product - if I ever do get to see it, is better than the experience leading up to receiving it!

PS - Farnell - If you're going to hold a webinar - make sure you have the bandwith, and systems to support the load!

They recorded the webinar and have assured everyone it will be available on element14 soon.

I joined late and found the http://www.element14.com/community/groups/raspberry-pi site was "Site Undergoing Maintenance" but luckily saw the tweet from @element14 that pointed to here.  I then got in ok.

They are working hard on the compliance.  Ebon joined from Cardiff instead of Cambridge.

I registered for it about a week ago, and logged in about 15 minutes beforehand.

It was my first ever webinar, and despite my low broadband connection speed of about 1 Mb/s, I have to say that I was very impressed with the quality of the presentation.

The slides were clearly displayed, there was a small (webcam size) live video (of Eben) running throughout, and also a live Q & A sesion, where some questions were being answered in 'real time'... and the sound was very clear.

Apparently they had about 2.800 prior registrations, but I have no idea (yet) as to how many actually attended, although I am sure we will be told in due course.

Well done Element 14, Eben, and all the others who were involved.

As has already been mentioned, Eben was actually still in Cardiff at the time, and not back in Cambridge as had originally been planned.

Edit: I was using Google Chrome running under Windows 7.

Given that Raspberry Pi is an open-source beastie, I'd suggest a more open webinar system perhaps. I don't have anything in particular in mind. My Linux browsers complained about the Java (sending me to Oracle to resolve the issue), and complained about the audio.  Oracle Java has licensing issues, and my audio works fine over the web with just about everything else I've tried...

Mike Powell     - 7:28 AM  A:  Hi Mark, there is no BIOS, but there is a configuration text file to set up the basics of the board.    ________________________________________________________________

Jean-Francois Lagarde     - 7:22 AM  Q:  I understand that the board automatically connects to a time server and the internet via dhcp? if we need static ip, I guess we need to modify the sources or is there a way to configure the settings of the Pi?

Mike Powell     - 7:29 AM  A:  Hi Jean-Francois, you can modify the network settings easily as you would any computer.    ________________________________________________________________

Andrea Benini     - 7:25 AM  Q:  Is there an I2C bus in the GPIO connector available for external peripherals ? I've made a really easy RTC circuit on I2C bus and I'd like to connect it to the PI. I can supply an RTC if the linux image is able to read it from I2C

Mike Powell     - 7:31 AM  A:  Hi Andrea - yes there is.

    ________________________________________________________________

Herbert Keks     - 7:30 AM  Q:  Will it be possible to run http://www.tvdr.de/ or xbmc on the Raspberry? This would be the killer app in my eyes. But I'm not sure about the video hw acceleration.

Mike Powell     - 7:34 AM  A:  xbmc has been shown to work. The onboard GPU supports high resolution, full motion video.    ________________________________________________________________

gary Paterson     - 7:31 AM  Q:  Hi Mike, what is the default version of python and is python 3 available?

Mike Powell     - 7:34 AM  A:  Hi gary, I don't know the answer to that sorry.    ________________________________________________________________

s2. henry     - 7:32 AM  Q:  hi,  what power supply do we need ? (voltage, current, physical size ?)

Mike Powell     - 7:36 AM  A:  A 'regular' phone charger with microUSB plug will work.    ________________________________________________________________

        - 7:36 AM  Q:  does Farnell have a rep at the factory?  If so, can they take a picture showing how many units have been built?      ________________________________________________________________

       - 7:37 AM  Q:  how many pallets of units were shipped back to China when the ethernet jack problem was found?      ________________________________________________________________

rohan kumar     - 7:38 AM  Q:  Is the Pi overclockable?

Mike Powell     - 7:39 AM  A:  Hi Rohan, yes it can be via the configuration script.    ________________________________________________________________

Charlie Godwin-Brown     - 7:39 AM  Q:  Can you get a desktop for your RPi?

Mike Powell     - 7:39 AM  A:  Yes, the Debian distro contains a GUI that you start with sudo startx. ________________________________________________________________

bryce foster     - 7:44 AM  Q:  If the raspberry pi is put in an enclosed project box will we have to worry about the ARM processor over heating?

Mike Powell     - 7:42 AM  A:  Hello Bryce, in my opinion you don't need to worry. The whole board only consumes 2-3W.    ________________________________________________________________

abi nathan     - 7:49 AM  Q:  what is the maximum amperage the pi can handle at 5v? Thanx

Mike Powell     - 7:44 AM  A:  Hi Abi, the Pi draws the current it requires from the USB power source. This is typically 500mA-750mA depending on what the GPU is doing.

    ________________________________________________________________

Stéphane Zorio     - 7:42 AM  Q:  Is a Apache server include in the Debian Distribution ?

Mike Powell     - 7:45 AM  A:  Hi Stephane, I don't know, but you can use a apt-get install command to install it as long as you are on the internet.    ________________________________________________________________

Stefan Fischer     - 7:42 AM  Q:  is the gpio pin description available?

Mike Powell     - 7:46 AM  A:  Hi Stefan - look at element14, the pin assignment is there.    ________________________________________________________________

Richard Blundell     - 7:43 AM  Q:  I'm hoping to add a 2nd network adaptor to my Pi (when it comes) and use it as a logger/filter on my home broadband.  Will this work and can you give me any pointers where to look to set this up (I only had a little Linux use some years ago)?

Mike Powell     - 7:47 AM  A:  I don't see why this shouldnt work using IP Tables in Linux for example.

    ________________________________________________________________

Andrea Gatti     - 7:43 AM  Q:  Hi, I'm a beginner so I want to know if there is any manual or guide online for learning to use and programm the raspberry pi?

Mike Powell     - 7:48 AM  A:  Hi Andrea - look at the various forums and guides that will grow on element14 as time goes by.    ________________________________________________________________

John Morris     - 7:44 AM  Q:  Can I hook the RPi up to a laptop screen?

Mike Powell     - 7:50 AM  A:  Hi John, not directly. Only to HDMI TV, DVI monitor or older style  TV. Command line via an SSH terminal is possible using an external laptop.

    ________________________________________________________________

Alessandro Ancillotti     - 7:45 AM  Q:  Will RaspberryPI able to run a webserver like lighttpd?

Mike Powell     - 7:52 AM  A:  Hi Allesandro, yes I have run mini_httpd on it.    ________________________________________________________________

AB AB     - 7:50 AM  Q:  can you use a triple usb adapter.

Mike Powell     - 7:53 AM  A:  Yes, hubs are supported.

    ________________________________________________________________

Chad Gray     - 7:53 AM  Q:  I am not a linux guy, but would we have to compile software like Apache/Tomcat/MySQL for the RPI?  Any examples of doing this?

Mike Powell     - 7:54 AM  A:  Yes, you can compile any programme from source, but it doesn't mean the programme will run acceptably.    ________________________________________________________________

Andrew Gates     - 7:54 AM  Q:  I missed the beginning of the presentation, is it going to be posted on the Raspberry Pi website?

Mike Powell     - 7:55 AM  A:  Hi Andrew, it will be on element14.

    ________________________________________________________________

I tried countless times (Linux with Firefox, and then with Chrome) without any success...    All I saw was an 'info' window in the java app, and myself showing up as the only attendee!     It would appear that maybe the webinar only worked with windows???    Oh, the irony..

    Thanks for the transcript, coder27.

Rather questionable advice given as an answer at 7:39 AM though:

7:39 AM  A:  Yes, the Debian distro contains a GUI that you start with sudo startx.

X11 should never be run as root.  It creates too large an attack surface, and people will regret it the first time that they make a mistake like "rm -rf / tmp/foo" (superfluous space).  Always run X as your non-root user, protect partially sensitive things with group privileges, and sudo only the occasional special command that absolutely must run as root.

    Morgaine.

Glad it worked for you David. Maybe I was unlucky or plain dumb. But I was really disappointed.

Perhaps I'll have better luck next time. Looking forward to the video on here now soon anyway.
