Element14 update on 27 Apr @ RPF site

I found myself a little excited to read the latest update from Farnell/Newark.   You can all go over and look.

However here are some highlights:

1.  Seems that they have 110,000 orders for the RPi.  This adds to another 70,000 that just registered interest and haven't ordered yet.

2.  They have 4,000 on the way right now from china for the next set of deliveries. I'd put my money on these being their share of the 8,000 remaining from the RPF original order of 10,000. You can make your own conclusions.

3.  They have an order for 12,000 coming mid-may.  First distributor production run?  Me thinks yes...

4.  Over the next few days all of those 110,000 customers will get a delivery date.

I'm curious to see these delivery dates.  I know that on Friday there were many people on various forums stating they got a date, even people who ordered in April. Most of these people seem to be in the UK.  Newark hasn't given dates yet, but I really hope that are somewhat aligned.

I don't think that we'll be able to draw any good conclusions about factory production rates from the date on which  batch #2 arrives, ie. the 12,000 mentioned above.  There was almost certainly a gap in production after batch #1 (2,000 + 8,000) came off the robotic assembly line, caused by 3 delaying factors:

    • Manual replacement of the incorrect RJ45 stalled the pipeline.
    • Certification process stopped production in case a redesign was needed.
    • New components needed to be sourced for ramped-up production.

However, if we assume that batch #2 is the first arriving from continuous production, then arrival of batch #3 should give us 2 datapoints from which to draw a line and hence start estimating production rate.  That's going to be very interesting, since for the first time we'll be able to see where a projection makes the production curve intersect the demand curve.  From there we'll gain our first insight into when units will become available ex-stock.

    Morgaine.

I ordered from Canada the morning of Feb29th.  I have not received any update emails from Newark/Element14 regarding any kind delay or a firm ship date yet.

After several delays, my order continues to show a ship date in August.

The lack of information from Newark/Element14 regarding all the delays and a firm ship date is really frustrating, given all the information in the RaspPI.org forums with people having received units and updated ship dates for May timeframe.  I understand all the delays but I really don't understand why Newark/Element14 is leaving Canadians in the dark.

Is this company so small it can't afford to send it's customers an email?

Congratulations to everyone else who already got their unit or have a firm ship date.
