Ethernet port turned off after few minutes

very strange! Is it from the 1st batch? Maybe this has something to do with the re-soldering process of the eth port....

How do I tell if it's first batch? I ordered a couple hours after launch on Feb/29 from element14 and received it May/7.

Look at the serial number it is in date time format.

Off hand I can't recall my serial number (I'm at work at the moment), but there is a post by me here under Pi in Oz that lists my serial number and mine was in the second batch.

OK at home now, as Coder27 says my ethernet jack isLU1S041ALF and the serial code is 2012-03-17 14:19

   It sounds to me like a hardware problem, so I'd suggest contacting Farnell for a replacement.

They have reportedly been very good about promptly replacing faulty units.

Since you received yours on May 7, it would be from the second batch, so there is

no reason to suspect it has a resoldered ethernet port.  The first batch was sent out

around April 13, and the second batch around May 1.

You can confirm it's from the second batch by looking for a CE mark sticker on the back.

The first batch doesn't have that.  As bodgy noted, you can also check the manufacturing

date encoded in the serial number on the back side.

Also, the first batch has an ethernet jack made by Bothand, that says LU1S041A LF;

in the second batch it's made by HanRun, and says HR901110A.

Also, on the front side of the board, between the power connector and the SD card,

the manufacturing date is apparently encoded, as 1208 for first batch, and 1213 for

the second, indicating week 08 and week 13 of 2012, respectively.

As someone else in possession of a Pi that seems to hang after a few minutes after booting I had initially considered that it might have a PSU issue but had ruled this out since I had tried a generic powered hub, a Belkin PSU rated at 5V 1A and a Nokia AC-10X rated at 5V 1200mA - all to no avail. WIth all three power PSUs the voltage across TP1 and TP2 seemed to be well within spec and other Pi owners seem to have had success with the likes of the Nokia charger.

What I would really like to see is a definitive statement about the PSUs that are known to be good and/or official PSUs from Farnell that are guaranteed to work. As it is, I'm still unsure of whether or not my Pi woes are power-related and, if so, how I can really tell without the need to invest in bench supplies, test kit over and above a multimeter, etc.

There's also a thread just started up at http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5900 so you might want to add your voice about the issue over there so those of us suffering from the problem can compare notes.

There is also speculation in the 'Hardware Flaws and Fixups' discussion on here regarding the power supplies.

FWIW, I am using an HTC Desire charger, 5V 1amp and touch wood seems to be OK so far. I did have some booting problems where it just appeared dead, but updated to the latest debian image and that seemed to solve it for me (19th April Image I believe)

Mine should be the second batch then since it's using HanRun HR901110A and the manufacturing date on the board says 1213.  I will have to find the HTC charger to try it out and will report back if that helps.

If you want to experiment, another thing to try would be a different SD card. One thread on the Pi board here

reports a temperature sensitivity (will not reboot when hot, but reboots OK if kept cool with a fan). This may occur with specific SD cards (not yet confirmed).  If you have a fan, could try running the fan over the Pi also. If that fixes the problem it would be very interesting to say the least.

So I tried HTC One X charger rated at 5V 1A but the Ethernet still shuts down after less than 5 minutes. I was able to SSH in before it went down though. I have sent RMA to element14 and they will be picking my unit up tomorrow for inspection.
