Boxing up Raspi?

Former Member
Former Member over 13 years ago

I would like to think that I could make a box to contain the Raspi, but looking at the Safety Information,

it should be operated in a ventilated environment and not covered.

And of course, it would be electricily safe, wouldn't it?

I have seen a report somwhere that a container was made from Lego bricks!

This is the place for y'all to hang out:  http://elinux.org/RPi_Cases  image

@John Beetem: I was researching BeagleBone cases today for a new section at http://elinux.org/BeagleBone , and was saddened that this lovely little board has so few casing options.  I guess I'll have to finish work on my 3D printer and design something new. image

In the USA you can get a tin of dog treats called Yip Yaps, which are shaped like little bones.  I need to see if the tin is the right size for BeagleBone -- much more humorous than Altoids :-)

My philosophy on BeagleBoard/Bone is that making your own case is part of the fun.  I adapted a Christmas candy box for my BeagleBoard.  It includes room for my power supply.

STM32F4-Discovery boards fit *exactly* into hinged 3.5" floppy disk boxes, incidentally. image

BeagleBone is just a bit too small for them, unless one doesn't mind one end being some way inside the box.

Thanks for the link to the "cases" site!

    Good collection, and clever!

I've got this case for the beaglebone -> http://builttospecstore.storenvy.com/products/277058-dockstar-enclosure-kit

Now it is available in clear.

About the RasPi I'm waiting for Adafruit to get theirs back in stock, but today I received my second RasPi from Element14 and found

that this one got shipped with a little sheet that says "RASPBERRY PI REGULATORY COMPLAINCE AND SAFETY INFORMATION"

On the WARNINGS box among other things it says:

"-This product should be operated in a well ventilated environment and should not be covered."

I guess that means good bye to a case ?

Tried to post that question (about it being covered) on the RasPi forum, but it got buried.

Unsurprisingly, i've just checked my leaflet and it says the same thing. It also warns against connecting any unapproved devices to the GPIO connectors, I thought that education was part of what this was about ? And if they can point me towards an 'approved' device and i'll happily buy it.

I remember seeing some comments about issues with temperature but can't find them now.

I've one of the RasPi up now, not running graphics, just responding to a constant ping over the network

the board draws about 400mA and the IR gun shows about 115F for the GPU/RAM stack.

Obviously the GPIO header goes straight to the BCM chip without much protection you can do a lot of damage.

I guess that little piece of paper is just sort a "I told you so" and invalidate the warranty.
