Is my Pi broken?

Got a Pi a few weeks ago and got it up and running with a Debian distro. USB worked with a wireless keyboard/touchpad (approved of in the RPi wiki), ssh worked. Also tried RaspBMC and OpenElec XBMC - in both cases they seemed to ignore USB once XBMC itself was running, although (IIRC) they recognised the keyboard while booting up.

 

Put it on one side for a while, then returned to it, and using exactly the same hardware (including PSU), started getting strange errors - on boot, it keeps reporting new USB device detected, regardless of whether anything is actually plugged in, then kernel panics. This happens with Debian, OpenElec and RaspBMC. As there is a significant difference in behaviour with no change in external hardware or software, it appears to me that something untoward has happened to the USB port IC.

 

Has anybody else had this? Is it likely to be a hardware fault? And if so, how do I return it to Farnell/Element 14 for exchange?

  • As a guess, I would first suspect that an iffy solder joint failed after thermal cycling.  USB crystal X1 is a likely suspect because RasPi forum users have reported problems with that part and have had success resoldering it.  X1 is most likely hand-soldered, and if so it's more likely to be poorly soldered than reflow-soldered parts.  In any case, I'd check the return policy right away so you don't miss a deadline.

    An alternative possibility is that one of the peripherals has developed a fault, especially if in between distributions they have stayed the same. Can they be tested on another machine, althought this wouldn't be conclusive as the machine might be more tolerant of extra current draw that the Pi might not.?
