Is my Pi broken?

Got a Pi a few weeks ago and got it up and running with a Debian distro. USB worked with a wireless keyboard/touchpad (approved of in the RPi wiki), ssh worked. Also tried RaspBMC and OpenElec XBMC - in both cases they seemed to ignore USB once XBMC itself was running, although (IIRC) they recognised the keyboard while booting up.

 

Put it on one side for a while, then returned to it, and using exactly the same hardware (including PSU), started getting strange errors - on boot, it keeps reporting new USB device detected, regardless of whether anything is actually plugged in, then kernel panics. This happens with Debian, OpenElec and RaspBMC. As there is a significant difference in behaviour with no change in external hardware or software, it appears to me that something untoward has happened to the USB port IC.

 

Has anybody else had this? Is it likely to be a hardware fault? And if so, how do I return it to Farnell/Element 14 for exchange?

  • Right, just sorted out the return on the phone. I'd had a look at the online returns form but it seems more geared to returning incorrectly ordered or supplied items than returning defective ones.

     

    As regards PSUs, the one I'm using is an unbranded iPhone replacement charger supplying 5V 1A. Also tried with a charger for a Sony mobile (which has lower current capacity) with similar results. As the original PSU had happily powered Pi plus keyboard for hours, if not days, it's probably up to the job.
