Shipping lead times

Preordered on 2012-07-02 through the 'business' route and was given a estimated delivery date of W/C 2012-09-03.

Email this AM says it's shipped today. Two weeks and a day lead time. I don't want to read too much into that, but there has to be at least some suggestion there that the 5 weeks on the web page is a conservative estimate.

I know of another one ordered via the consumer route (ORPxxx number) one day later on the 3rd July, so it'll be interesting to find out when that one ships.

BTW, I'm in the UK, so I wouldn't read too much into this for anyone not in the UK either.

Oh, and nothing on the one ordered from RS on the 1st July which said 'dispatch within 12 weeks'...

    OMG, under 3 weeks.

Element 14 / Farnell +1000 ... well done people, you're getting there. image

I feel that my wait for Pi to be a normal ex-stock Farnell product for next-day delivery is not that far from ending.  Credit card awaits in expectation. image

That is a very good assumption. I live in the US so that must be why. Anyone from the UK care to ship me one? image

Farnell UK is an extremely efficient operation.  At this rate of improvement, UK Pis will soon be delivered the day before you order. image

So, just to add confusion... bulk order via the business route from July 16th, shipped yesterday, received today.

Consumer ORPxxx order from July 3rd, supposedly shipped on Monday 23rd as yet hasn't appeared. However another email has been received - a day or so after the shipping confirmation saying "We can now confirm that your Raspberry Pi will be dispatched the week commencing 30/07/2012. We are aiming to fulfil your order earlier wherever possible and you will receive a confirmation email prior to your Raspberry Pi being shipped."

Altogether rather strange.  The moral of the story ?   Take the order as a business route if it's available..

Just for you information, here is my history:

    Registered my interest: 29-05

Invitation mail received and ordered (OPRxxx): 22-06

    Shipment mail received: 17-07

Raspi arrived in Germany in the morning of 23-07

In the evening I turned it on. It worked right away and I am a very proud owner now!

What was the delivery method going the business route?

Because I value tracked next-day delivery for Farnell UK products very highly, I will be very annoyed if, once the Pi is available ex-stock, I don't receive ordered Pis through Farnell's usual delivery service.

Eg. last night I placed an order with Farnell UK after office hours for a few miscellaneous bits and bobs, all ex-stock, and the UPS van arrived here before noon today.  Now that's service.

If a little extra needs to be charged for Pi to be delivered the same way, that's fair, I don't expect a company to be out of pocket for providing better service.  But to offer only a poor service even when people are happy to pay extra for better delivery is not a customer-friendly business plan.  I hope Pi becomes a normal Farnell product once they're in plentiful stock, and doesn't remain exclusive to export.farnell.com with its 2nd Class Royal Mail delivery only.

    Morgaine.

What was the delivery method going the business route?

    1st Class Royal Mail.

the UPS van arrived here before noon today.  Now that's service.

The postman arrived just after 10am, in general that's been working out much earlier than UPS for me. I suppose a lot depends on where you are and what your local postal/UPS service is like.

However, as I've said elsewhere, I find that a lot of my recent orders have been sent through RM rather than UPS and it's worked out well for me. Like ordering at 7pm on a Friday evening and having the rather large box arrive before noon on a Saturday rather than Monday as it would be with UPS.

But it does seem that the business orders are going through the normal channels, so you could if you desire, pay the extra and have it delivered pre 9am next day.

It's definitely not exclusive to export.farnell.com already. You can order them from uk.farnell.com using your normal account details today. Sure, they're not quite ex-stock just yet, but as you've already observed that's rapidly getting closer.

For anyone in the UK, going down the consumer/export route seems to be a silly thing to do since uk.farnell.com isn't restricted to business customers, anyone with a credit/debit card can use it. I understand that's not the case in other countries though, so some people are inevitably going to be stuck with the export site and that's unfortunate. It doesn't appear as if RS are any better in this regard either.

Farnell continues accepting orders for next day delivery until 8pm though, which I suspect would add an extra day to 1st Class Royal Mail if placed after office hours  The old national monopoly is probably still 9-5ish, I'd expect.

At least for me they don't actually say next day delivery. The wording is "Same day despatch when you order before 8.00pm"  and "Farnell element14 offers fast same day despatch, normally delivered to you free the next working day." which isn't quite the same.

They do also give various guaranteed next day options at additional cost..

Like I said, I've had one order placed at just after 7pm on a Friday arrive via RM on Saturday morning. That doesn't appear to be 9-5 in my book.

On the other side of it, I ordered some lithium batteries at the end of May but didn't notice they were shipping from Belgium. My fault. But as they can't send those by air, they went by road and spent 4 days sitting in a UPS warehouse in London over the jubilee holiday, so it can end up being just as bad either way image

Anyway, I suspect you're correct in some respects... place an order at 9am that they can ship @ 10am by RM and they'll take the cheaper option..  Order at 7:59pm and it'll be UPS if it ships that day.  It may simply be that most of my recent orders have been placed early AM that's causing them to use RM since there's little risk if they can ship early.

I guess it will depend on when you order relative to their next delivery. Looking at the dispatch notes with my recent ones they've all been printed off a good 2-3 days in advance, so they obviously know when to expect the delivery and are planning ahead.

uk.farnell.com is showing "207 in stock for next working day delivery (UK stock)" this morning.  Seems from what we've seen that the deliveries are arriving over the weekend or Monday morning with lots of people getting shipping emails at the beginning of each week.

Could it be that they have effectively caught up by next week ?  I still wonder about the people who don't appear to have received theirs yet though.
