First time login over ethernet?

I've loaded Wheezy on an SD card and from the flickering green LED I think it is booting fine.

 

I can't get a display when I connect the yellow RCA connector to my analog TV, and I don't have HDMI.

 

When I connect a crossover ethernet between my computer and the Raspberry Pi,  one yellow and two green LED's light up  -  I presume this indicates the ethernet is working OK.

 

Is there a way with an unmodified Wheezy distribution to connect to the Raspberry Pi over ethernet (using a crossover ethernet cable)?

 

If so, what is the IP address to use?

 

And does one use telnet, ssh, or what?

  • You can not connect to the RPi on first boot-up with a cross-over cable. 

     

    Using a cross over cable means that you would have to configure the IP addresses on both devices (RPi and PC) manually. 

     

    You cannot do this without using a screen / router (to give your little Pi an IP address that it needs).

     

    If you do connect your RPi to a router/DHCP server, then you can ssh into it using a program such as PuTTy.  But even then, you would have to find-out your RPi's IP address some how.  If on a home network, you could use your router's User Interface or a program that tells you what is on your network. (for example FastResolver).
