Raspberry Pi just assembled

I have just assembled the Pi and on connection only the red indicator is lighting up. The green has not flashed. The card I purchased had the OS already burnt on which came from the UK..Have taken it OUT and started again several times but still not working.Be grateful for any suggestions especially as this is the first one in our area in Qld. Aust

Sounds like the iamge could be corrupt, or the power supply isn't up to the job (many aren't)

Check that your power supply can provide 5v@1A. That is the problem with most people.

Thanks for the comment Steve, Will now follow that site up.Also will check out the power supply again .Have been in touch with the supplier in UK who is sending out another card and power supply.Good service!!!!

John W: Do check the Troubleshooting guide Steve links to. Lots of RasPi problems are due to iffy power supply and/or iffy Micro USB cable. Some Micro USB cables have thin conductors which cause too much voltage drop. Best way to check it out is to measure TP1-TP2 as described in the Troubleshooting guide.

Also, take a look at the SD Card contacts carefully with a magnifier. We have had reports of bent SD Card contacts.

Also, be sure you have pushed the SD Card all the way in. It may require some force, so look at how the SD Card socket is designed and make sure your card is all the way in.

Many thanks for your comments John. I have printed out that link Steve suggested.The SD card appears to be inserted ok & the wire acting as a spring works well.However when I inserted the card into my Windows machine the computer suggested to format the card first!!!!! Upon cacellation it then stated unknown.So unable to check what is on the card.Also tried with no cables connected etc. but no difference.Am awaiting a friend to arrive with a meter to check the power supply...mine is us!!Thanks again John

The card with the pi image contains a small fat partition with the kernel and the bootfiles. That should be visible when you check the card on a windows system. So, you have a drive letter with some files in it. The partition is only 70 - 80 MB in size. The green led is comparable with the harddisk activity indicator of a pc. It should flash when the pi is accessing the sd card.
