Former Member over 13 years ago

I have just assembled the Pi and on connection only the red indicator is lighting up. The green has not flashed. The card I purchased had the OS already burnt on which came from the UK..Have taken it OUT  and started again several times but still not working.Be grateful for any suggestions especially as this is the first one in our area in Qld. G'day Luc,

When I place the card in a Windows system I get the following:

'you need to format the disk in drive I: before you can use it'

    Then upon cancelling that the following message appears;

' The volume does not contain a recognised file system. Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted'

Thus I am unable to see what is on the card.

No green light whatsoever appears in any shape or form!!!

    Thanks for your comment.

    John

    Hello John,

That sounds a lot to me like a corrupt image on the card - as Luc says above, you should be able to see a small partition on your Pc on the card, and the fact you are not getting the green light makes me think the Pi can't see the card either. I'd be tempted to either 1) Borrow an SD card from a friend, download an image from the Raspi.org's web site and try that http://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads or use 2) the card you have already got and re-image that. Thing is, you have paid a premium to get the card with the image on it, and if re-imaging works, you have just performed the very job you paid the premium for :-( (And it will be difficult to say it doesn't work, when it does, if you see what I mean.

Borrowing a new card and seeing if that works with a fresh image is probably the way I would go, if that is OK is proves that the card is corrupt (and the other components are OK)

    Steve & Luc,

Thought you may be interested to know that today had the power supply checked and is on 5v but no output figure  available! but could not get that myself later!!!! Purchased a card reader ( despite one already in the computer) and received the same answer as before in Windows. As I have a separate partition in Windows for Mandriva tried it out there. The device was accepted but inserting the card nothing happened. So appears must be the card. So decided to try writing one myself . I already have  the .img file of Debian. Tried to download the Win32 DiskImanager but was advised it would not download but try again later!!!! This went on most of the day and now given up for the time being!!! I also have the Oracle Virtual  Box in Windows with Debian but no joy there either. You may wonder why I bother with this but I joined a computer club here earlier this year to learn Linux ( to keep the brain active!!) and this cropped up in our group and followed it through hoping to learn more on elementary programming.Guess it will sort itself out in time!!!

Cheers to you both and appreciate your comments........John

    Sad to hear.

And I thought I was having problems with my Pi....

I would suggest to try to format the sd card under windows. If it doesn't work, the sd card is really fubarred, and you will need another sd(hc) card. If it works, you should be able to copy files to it afterwards. (Not usefull for the Pi, just to know if the card is fine)

There are also instructions to write the debian image to the card under linux. Maybe that's an option if the download of diskimanager isn't working.

You can use your mandriva or your debian. Virtualbox has an option to forward usb devices to the client os.

I can also upload diskimanager on mediafire, so you can get it from there. Just let me know if you want to try that road.

The Pi sure keeps your brain active, but be aware it can cause hart rithm disturbance, due to all it's issues.

Previous link should get you the win32diskimager.

If you copy an image to the card, you should see the 75MB fat32 boot partition and it's files. It requires to remove the card and insert it again. You can only mount the second ext4 partition on a linux system.

Hi Luc ,I went to buy a 8gb card and found the cost was cheaper to get another with the OS system installed from the UK post free!!! So ordered that and already have been advised on its way. This will give me 2 copies hopefully!

However have since read Steve and your comments and have been able to download win32diskmanager from mediafire. So will now wait until the disks arrive, maybe next week sometime, but will at some stage write my own as want to  know how it is done, plus have the original disk to format.

Will keep you both informed and really appreciate very much indeed both your assistance.

    Kind regards.

    John

win32diskmanager can also be used the other way around, to make a backup of the image of an sd card.

A few spare sd cards to experiment with are always usefull.

Just out of curiousity, don't you have a local supplier of those?

They are the same used in cellphones and digital cameras.

Maybe you don't live close to a town?
