Raspberry Pi just assembled

I have just assembled the Pi and on connection only the red indicator is lighting up. The green has not flashed. The card I purchased had the OS already burnt on which came from the UK..Have taken it OUT  and started again several times but still not working.Be grateful for any suggestions especially as this is the first one in our area in Qld. Aust

    Hi Luc ,I went to buy a 8gb card and found the cost was cheaper to get another with the OS system installed from the UK post free!!! So ordered that and already have been advised on its way. This will give me 2 copies hopefully!

    However have since read Steve and your comments and have been able to download win32diskmanager from mediafire. So will now wait until the disks arrive, maybe next week sometime,but will at some stage write my own as want to  know how it is done, plus have the original disk to format.

    Will keep you both informed and really appreciate very much indeed both your assistance.

    win32diskmanager can also be used the other way around, to make a backup of the image of an sd card.

    A few spare sd cards to experiment with are always usefull.

    Just out of curiousity, don't you have a local supplier of those?

    They are the same used in cellphones and digital cameras.

    Maybe you don't live close to a town?

    Yes we do have several local suppliers in and near the town but thought would be easier at the moment to get the OS already written so can spend a bit of time experimenting!!! We live in a place called Little Mountain which is just outside of Caloundra on the coast about  1 1/2 hours drive north of Brisbane in Quensland. great weather at the moment!!!!

    HI Luc and Steve, Am writing this through Raspberry Pi !!!!! Took the bull by the horns this afternoon and downloaded wheezy-raspbian-zip and also how to make a disk image.Then formatted the disk that came wih the OS on and wrote to it and it worked!!!! Wonders will never cease!!!!!!! However the wireless keyboard and mouse I acquired for it does'nt like it very much despite changing a few things so hooked in the one from my laptop and worked without changing any thing!! So will now see what else goes on and does'nt work!!! Now the fun starts.

    Great news John :-)

     

    The Pi often doesn't seem to like wireless keyboards and mice, the current requirement for most of them seems too much.

    Good to hear you are making progress.

     

    Do a search for hexxeh rpi-update script and install it.

    run a sudo rpi-update. It will bring your kernel to the latest version.

    Some fixes are in it for usb issues like the one you see with your wireless keyboard. (no guarantee)

    Basically, you can also run 'sudo apt-get upgrade' and 'sudo apt-get update'

    You can run the 'uname -a' command to see what kernel you are running. It should be 3.2.27+ #xxx

    Luc & Steve,

    Thanks guys, I moved the Logitech keyboard and mouse from the laptop to the Pi and worked well straight off!! and the Microsoft one to the laptop and no problems!!!!! So all is well...Simple eh? Why? No idea!!!!!!!

    Will folllow your suggestion up on the fixes thanks Luc.

  • It is important that the board is getting at least 4.75v on the board. I got my Pi on Thursday and after loading the image onto the SD card using my Mint Linux machine I placed the card into the socket on the PI (had mouse, keyboard, monitor and ethernet hooked up) and plugged in my power. The board came up just fine and while it was booting up I measured the DC on the board itself, I got 4.87v which is low but ok. I'll probably just build a small 5.25 V supply to make sure I'm getting 5v on the board.

     

    As soon as it booted it went out and found any updates all by itself, also I was offered the option of using the whole 8GB SDHC card instead of the 2GB partition so now I have plenty of room for programs and files. Hell my old Toshiba TSE1000 only had 1MB of ram and two floppy disks on it and that was plenty for that era.

    IMO, 4.87V is plenty for the RasPi, with good margin.  My own RasPi works down to 4.65V.  It really depends on your peripherals: if they work fine at 4.87V there's really no need to increase it to 5.0V.

     

    Since 3.3V regulator RG2 is a linear regulator, you're better off with 4.87V instead of 5.0V: RG2 won't run as hot with 4.87V input.
