HDMI Works in safe mode... But not much else

I have my board plugged into my monitor as an HDMI input. I can get to the Rasbian desktop by uncommenting the "hdmi_safe=1" in config.txt. However, I'd like to work in a resolution that doesn't make my eye's bleed, so I've been trying for the last couple days to find the correct settings in the config.txt, and I've about given up. Any help would be great. I've tried several modes, but no matter what I try I get no image and the following from tvservice -s:


pi@raspberrypi ~ $ /opt/vc/bin/tvservice -s

What steps do I need to take to work through this problem? Thanks in advanced. The monitor in question is a Acer H243HX.

    A good starting point is the RasPi Troubleshooting Wiki: http://elinux.org/R-Pi_Troubleshooting#No_HDMI_output_at_all.

     

    There are myriad config.txt options at: http://elinux.org/RPi_config.txt#Video_mode_configuration.  It says that "hdmi_safe=1" is equivalent to "hdmi_force_hotplug=1, config_hdmi_boost=4, hdmi_group=1, hdmi_mode=1, disable_overscan=0"  Try putting those in place of "hdmi_safe=1": you should get the same behavior.  Then change each option individually and see which one causes your monitor to fail.  A good  possibility is "hdmi_force_hotplug", but there are lots of options as you well know.

    Thanks for the reply John.   I've seen that documentation prior to posting here and tried each step.  In a fit of rage last night, I deleted the config.txt, restored a old back up of it and set only "hdmi_group=1", "hdmi_mode=4", "hdmi_force_hotplug=1" and it magically started working. I also verified that "hdmi_mode=16" gives me 1080p and it worked great.

     

    I could swear I tried that orgionally, but in retrospect, I think I probably had other options select that may have been screwing it up.

     

    edit:  changed type in group to mode.

    you may have made a typo, it looks like you are setting hdmi_group

    to both 1 and 4.

    I wouldn't put it past me, but at home on my system I was just uncommenting the defaults in the config.txt and editing the numbers.  I had to retype them here at work to reply to John's post, which is where the problem you are seeing came from.  I'll edit my origional post to reflect the correct values.
