Well all the schools are back. Raspberry Pi shipments seem to be going pretty swimmingly now. I really expected this place to be hot enough with discussions to bake a Pi. (Sorry all) image

 

Seriously, what is everybody up to I am still working hard on improving my soldering skills and pushing the Pi to its limits whenever I can.

 

Dark nights drawing in now so peering up to the night sky takes over from solder school soon.

    plus maybe 45 seconds for the reboot.

    if a reboot takes 45 seconds it's my feeling that it's getting slower, not faster image

    No doubt there is a decent performance increase.  What is in doubt for me

    is that the increase is solely for the reasons they state (overclock+USB).

     

    I would also dispute the "for free".  Yes, of course they aren't charging money

    for the turbo mode.  But it uses about 50% more power, which puts considerable

    stress on an already troublesome power system (5v supply, power cable, F3 fuse).

    So the RPi is at increased risk of failing, and there's no test you can run to be sure

    your device works fine in turbo mode.

     

    Usually, if you notice a failure, you can turn off turbo mode, but some failures are

    intermittent, such as missed keystrokes, so you aren't sure if the failure is due to

    turbo mode. And there has been at least one report of a bricked device after a day

    on turbo mode.

    and so it starts..  that particular one does sound somewhat more like a polyfuse problem, but the whole turbo mode thing just throws another random variable into the mix. It would seem to have made a lot more sense to only include modes they were sure would work on every board.

     

    and I really don't like the whole holding shift to disable turbo mode, especially as it was made to sound like that was checked in an init script somewhere. Hopefully wiping the sd card erases any turbo setting too, or that report where it won't boot so you can't get to a point where holding shift helps will become a lot more common.
