In the linked RPF thread, Norman Dunbar links to his write-up about a 7-port hub that appears to be identical in every respect to the product which I bought from Farnell UK, which I described in a dedicated thread right here -- Incompatible Self-Powered Hub .
I strongly suspect that Farnell was caught out by a counterfeit supplier as well (either that or Dynamode themselves are the culprits). There was no response from Element 14 in my thread, probably because this is not an appropriate channel and I didn't make an official customer complaint nor return the device since I am using it successfully attached to an Intel PC, not to the Pi.
I'm actually rather surprised that no action was taken about this Farnell product, despite the lack of official channels. Farnell is still selling the device as a Pi accessory (despite being incompatible and non-USB-compliant because of backfeed), and as the RPF blog points out, that is a bad idea. The unit supplied is on at least two counts out of step with the claims made on the packaging, so it's a trades description issue as well as presenting an element of danger.

PS. The larger part of my thread concerned incompatibility with Raspberry Pi. To save wading through 3 pages of posts, the product misrepresentation issues (the USB certification question and the fact that the supplied charger was not 2A as claimed) were described in this post .

Actually, the backfeed has changed from a Bug to a Feature. With RasPi rev 2 and Ohmless rev 1, you can now power your RasPi from a non-compliant hub and discard the Micro USB cable. You lose the protection of F3. I'm using my RasPi rev 1 with a Motorola Atrix Lapdock, which deliberately back-feeds on its Micro USB connector. I replaced polyfuses F1 and F2 with 1.0A single-blow fuses.
