boot errors

My Pi shows some odd behaviour during initial boot up.  I started with a pre loaded OS from CPC in September and have sudo apt-get updated it this week.  During the boot process, when an excess of text runs up my screen, I see that wlan0 gets changed to wlan1 (Ican't remember the exact words) and then the following errors appear (Ihad to photo the screen to find it!)

"configuring network interfaces...wpa_supplicant: /sbin/wpa_supplicant daemon failed to start
run-parts: /etc/network/if-pre-up.d/wpasupplicant exited with return code 1
Failed to connect to wpa_supplicant - wpa_ctrl_open: no such file or directory
wpa_supplicant: /sbin/wpa_cli daemon failed to start
run-parts: /etc/network/if-up.d/wpasupplicant exited with return code 1
done."

Predictably, the wlan doesn't work, never has, although to be fair I have only just been through the very complete driver instructions found at

http://www.savagehomeautomation.com/projects/raspberry-pi-installing-the-edimax-ew-7811un-usb-wifi-adapte.html.

I have the Edimax WiFi dongle referred to on that page.

I am a newbee at this.  Can someone explain the above errors, why the waln0 gets changed to wlan1, how to slow the boot script so that I have time to read some of it and what I need to do to get my wireless working?

Ta. Andrew.

It is possible that the preloaded image on the card you have is not up to date and something missing is resulting in it disconnecting and being reconfigured as the next wlan number.

"sudo apt-get update"does not update the system, it only updates the package lists, which you should do before you "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" to actually upgrade installed packages and any dependencies (from a temporary wired network until you get wireless working).  Even the image I downloaded within the past 2 or 3 weeks had a bunch of apt-get updates available.

But my WiFi experience with the Pi is limited (just received it yesterday).  I was trying to power Pi, 100 mA Logitech BT mini-receiver (di Novo Edge keyboard mousepad), and 500 mA Linksys W56GSC (which has long been supported by Linux) with a tiny USB hub (2.6 A @ 5V).  WiFi actually worked for a short period of time.  But then the tiny USB hub would get hot, the Logitech BT kept disconnecting/reconnecting, and wireless disconnect completely (wlan0 would disappear) with errors like this in dmesg:

    [  766.028218] hub 1-1.3:1.0: port 1 disabled by hub (EMI?), re-enabling...

[  767.813347] hub 1-1.3:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1

So for now I am using Newark 5.25V 1 A power to the Pi with the 100 mA Logitech BT on Pi USB and tiny Netgear ethernet wireless bridge with its own 1 A power (instead of using its USB power cable).  Currently my wireless bridge takes care of the wireless association/encryption and all the Raspberry Pi has to do is get a dhcp IP, etc. automatically through eth0.
