Keyboard not mapped correctly?

I was hooking up my new Rapsberry Pi and started working on making the wifi connection. I'm noticing that the keyboard isn't quite matching what I am typing. Only on a couple things. Those things are #, @ and ~. For some odd reason, they are found at |, SHIFT ' and SHIFT |. Does anyone know what my problem is?

I did swap out the keyboard and other keyboards act the same. Also, the other keyboards work fine on the other machines.

Hi Dave,

For starters make sure your /etc/defaults/locale is set correctly. The distribution comes defaulted to en_GB and the keyboard layout is slightly different. You can use 'sudo raspi-config' to set or whatever else you're comfortable with. Secondly make sure your keyboard is listed here: http://elinux.org/RPi_VerifiedPeripherals

The only poor question is the one not asked. I had the same problem earlier and and while poking around realized what the solution might be and it worked for me. I'm sure a lot of owners hit the same problem here on this side of the pond.

Its worse when you have two of the same PC's.
One that was supplied with the project that has a UK keyboard, and another that uses the US version......

Some keys are in different locations.....

Some of the distros include the location, etc in a start script...
