Ras Pi as a security Device

I've been thinking about getting the British Gas Safer Home starter kit, as per here: http://www.britishgas.co.uk/products-and-services/safe-and-secure/starter-kit.html

A thought closely on the heels of that one (and in a effort to save some cash) was to put the Pi to use as a similar device. I beleive the system used Zigbee as the wireless system so although the on-line part wouldn't be that easy to replicate, the rest of it should be.

I'd be grateful to hear any thoughts and if indeed it would be cost effective.

I tend to agree, sadly some home alarm is virtually essential these days. If you're going down the ready-built route, you may also want to consider honeywell systems, they are rather low cost and I believe are one of the standard types installed by alarm fitters. The configuration on them is a little convoluted but very feasible. Personally I would use a wired system, but sometimes that is not possible.
For a home-built solution, the rasp-pi would be ideal if you wanted to add internet connectivity to your alarm system. It may be easier to use an existing alarm system (e.g. the honeywell types) and add the Rasp-Pi to it. Most of the existing systems have LED status lights, and lots of room inside the case (as long as you don't buy the 'compact' control panels), so it could be feasible to monitor some LEDs (just solder a wire to it) via
the Rasp-Pi. This way, you'd have a reliable system that could continue to function even if the add-on misbehaves.
