I think as long as he does it academically he's on safe ground.  But when you publish your results and technique expect cease and deists orders from Microsoft, even if its an abandonware version of their OS.  If you profit from it in anyway expect a lawsuit.  There is a reason so many things are published anomously.

I'm intrigued with the idea of using microcontrollers with the Pi.  Are they for inputs or are you try to emulate other hardware?

Platform builder used to come with a 30 day evaluation version. As long as you don't sell platforms with windows embedded (CE) on it, you are fine.

Your biggest problem will likely be to get usb running, as you need it for networking and user input. Windows CE used to have support for UHCI, OHCI and EHCI controllers. I don't think the Pi synoptics usb host controller resembles one of those.

You can use raw frame buffer access as video output, but it will be slow. I know windows CE devices can work without a display.

Another issue is finding drivers for different usb devices like wifi dongles. Keyboards and mice are supported. Memory sticks and usb harddrives should work as well. usb2serial devices shouldn't be a problem either. Networking devices, that's another story.

But, don't let me temper your enthousiasm. My last experiments with CE were CE 5.0. Maybe things have improved with the newer versions.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Bit Police haven't already entered your computer, downloaded your contacts, and have tapped their 1's and 0's to build a case against you for just thinking about it....

It was a honest mistake about the dis-assembling, I didn't change anything on windows mobile 5. I was looking more for similarities that may help. My post says about modifying or adding on to the PI to make it work not modding windows, I am quite aware that modding a copywritten program is illegal. I figure more adding to the PI and writing code for linux to accept Windows. I legally own the copy of Windows Mobile 5 so I do have the product code. I have a fully operational HP pocket computer and a replacement fully functional mother board and processor. I have also contacted Microsoft to discuss my idea and the possibilities. If anyone has ideas for what I am thinking of doing I will share the software (my code, not Windows). I have no intentions of selling or giving any of the MS software. As well, if this works, MS will be the first contacted of success and direct me in which direction to go.

Windows Mobile 5 is not like other windows that it runs out of the box on different architectures.

If you have a version that functions as update for a hp pocket computer, it will only work on that pocket computer hardware.

Windows Mobile is based upon Windows CE. While you can freely experiment with Windows CE development. (It's a plugin for Visual Studio now), you needed to sign an NDA with Microsoft to design a Windows Mobile platform. Your hardware also needs to furfill some specifications. The early pocket pc's and some early smartphones used it untill that market was taken over by Android.
