Raspberry Pi networking box with proxies, needing help building one.

Hello Zander, the Pi doesn't have gigabit Ethernet on board. I'm not sure if the on-board processor could even cope with that. The bus is shared with the USB port(s) if I remember correctly, so if gigabit Ethernet is critical to you, I don't think the Pi will be for this project.

My first question would be, is Gigabit Ethernet really required ? You can quite easily have mixed speeds on the same network, so is such a high throughput really critical to you ?

My suggestion to you @xan326  is that you use something other than the Pi for this project.  Reasons:

1)  The Pi has one Ethernet Port that uses USB speeds (10/100 Mbit), therefore you would have to realy on the WiFi as your backup connection.  (which isn't what you want to do)

2)  It is not very powerful compared to a proper server that would normally run a proxy.  And you have expressed above that you want a high speed network.

I do hope you find a way to make your project work for you, with or without the Pi.

Do any of these boards, beaglebone or arduino or others, have gigabit ethernet? That's my internet speed and I'd like to get the most speed out of this. I'm new to this and its a headache trying to find information on all of these boards. Is there a possibility I could find a board that I can add an ethernet controller to, probably on a breadboard? I don't really mind having to go out of my way for the best solution. Anyways, thanks for your imputs.

ALSO I think I didn't quite explain this completely nor correctly. What I'm needing is like a middle box to be anonymous, with wifi and gigabit ethernet IN and with wifi and multiple gigabit ethernet out. Sorry if there was any confusion. I'm wanting something that can take in internet, whether wireless or wired, and put out an anon network that is wired and wireless.

You're internet speed is 128Megabytes down? They do sell gigabit USB ethernet dongles if you really need that speed for incoming internet traffic.

It's gigabit internet speeds, so I'd like to get the most of my internet.

So you have a fiber connection or cable? Because a 10Mbit network would work fine on a cable or DSL connection.

I'm connected to twisted pair, but the internet speed is gigabit. So I need something with RJ-45 connections, specifically 10/100/1000.

Not that I don't believe you on your internet speed, but can you run a speed test and show or tell me the outcome? I have a 20megabit line which gets me 2000kbs/2megabytes. And the dongle does have an RJ-45 with a gigabit port.

It's actually my school's speed, and I'm moving soon to Kansas City where I can get Google Fiber which is gigabit ethernet. So I need gigabit ports so I can have my max speed.

And what I'm needing is this sorry for my bad paint skills, but just so its easier to understand.

The PI will work, just buy the USB ethernet dongle and google fiber is 1Gbit which is equal too 128Mbytes. With those kinda speeds you should look into getting on a 10Gbit network. ha
