Powering Raspberry Pi with HDTV USB port

I was watching a Chromecast review last night and found out that it has to be plugged into your HDTV's USB port for power. This gave me the idea to try it with the Raspberry Pi. I have a Sony BRAVIA KDL-32EX400 HDTV that features a USB port for connecting USB flash drives for viewing photos on the TV. I plugged my Raspberry Pi into this port with a Micro USB cable and it worked! It powered the Raspberry Pi no problem. I don't own a multimeter to test the voltages, but it worked fine. This is great because the power supply I've been using has issues. Now I can simply power the Raspberry Pi right from the HDTV. Just wanted to share this discovery.

  • Out of curiosity, are you using the model A or the Model B?  Also are you powering any peripherals off the Pi's USB ports?  And what all are you doing with the pi (i.e. any graphic heavy processes)?

     

    I ask mainly because my attempts to do this failed, but I think it was because my TV limited the USB port to 500 mA per USB 2.0 specs, but it sounds like your TV gives it a full amp or more.  That or you're not doing heavy power stuff with the Pi, which is why I ask, lol.
