What Model of Pi do I have?

A friend a while ago gave me a Raspberry Pi. I really like it because it's fun to use just for kicks outside of using a Windows machine. But I have two questions. First, and the main one, how do I tell which model of Pi do I have. Two how to I connect the Pi to a shared folder from my Windows 7 computer?

    The Samsung DRAM chip is probably a K4P2G324 or a K4P4G324.  The 2G chip has 2 Gib (2 gigglebits) of memory = 256 MiB.  The 4G chip has 4 Gib (4 gigglebits) of memory = 512 MiB.  Memory chip makers traditionally specify memory size in bits rather than bytes.

    Ah!! I see and understand because mine has the K4P2G.. so mine is the 256MB version! Thank you sir! Also is it ok to run the Pi all the time? Are there models to be releast in the new feature with better hardware?

    From what I've read, it's usually OK to run a RasPi continuously.  This is especially true of the newer RasPis with the mounting holes.  Your early RasPi has a design error that causes the LAN9512 USB/Ethernet chip to run hot on some boards.  If you put such a board in a closed case with no air flow, in my opinion it could overheat and fail, or at least the excessive temperature could shorten the life of the board.  My personal solution is to mount my RasPi vertically so that I get natural convection on both sides of the PC board.  I also rarely use the Ethernet, so the LAN9512 doesn't have to work very hard which keeps it from getting hot.

     

    Since you're planning to do a lot of networking, keep an eye (or finger-tip) on the LAN9512.  If it's getting too hot to touch, you might want to put a heat sink on it: do a search for "Raspberry pi heat sink" at the top of the page.  Some people have added fans, but a heat sink is probably good enough as long as your case has good air flow.

     

    Future models are anybody's guess.  There's lots of speculation on the subject here at element14 and at raspberrypi.org.  RasPi is very quiet about new versions, and they're generally shipped before they're announced officially to avoid the "Osborne Effect".  For more performance, a lot of people here are going with BeagleBone Black (ARM Cortex-A8) or Wandboard or Sabre Lite (ARM Cortex-A9) or even the Parallella.  Here's a fun thread on the subject: http://www.element14.com/community/thread/19997?tstart=0

    My case for the Pi is open and I still have the A/C in my room so it's pretty well cold. But I will get a heat sink at some point.
