My lovely RaspberryPi is dead...

Former Member
Former Member over 12 years ago

I was so looking forward to it and I was pleasantly surprised how the  RaspBMC from the NOOBS package worked, I have even bought a wireless  keyboard for it ( http://www.totalhtpc.com/logitech-k400r-wireless-touch-keyboard-review/ ) but...

The problem started about a week ago, when I had to unplug  everything to get the image going, as it was all stuck. Several reboots  and it started working again but all that unplugging and plugging it  back again - maybe it was the electricity somehow damaging some of the  HDMI/composite circuitry?

I can see  that it is powered up (there is red light inside) but neither HDMI, not  Composite cables give me any image whatsoever, on the TV.

I  have reformatted and copied the NOOBS files to the SD card, as  described on your pages - but I get no system booting in any way. Not a  flicker of an image on my TV.

The SD card seems OK, as I have dealt with it in my laptop without a problem.

I also tried other OSs, like RaspBMC alone, as well as OpenELEC. Alas, to no avail. The same applies.

I have tried different ports and different cables. Not a squeak.

Therefore, I must conclude it is the HW that is faulty.

Please, instruct me how to return the Pi to you.

A refund is preferable to "repair and return", at this point. No response from "sales" at Fernell, sadly... Just forwarded it to the other email...

========================================

In addition, I hope this might help a bit...

I  have read that Pi  might be susceptible to varying voltage/electricity problems. I have a  Belkin safety multiple extension cord, with serious protection against  electricity surges. So, can it still be an electrical mishap?

Or is it simply the power supply issue, as some here have suggested, in which case we would need a really good one, properly advertised here and on sales website...

May  I also suggest a ON/OFF switch, as a good idea, which may go  a certain  way towards preventing this from occurring. I understand that it only  uses very little electricity but I think this is beside the point.  Sometimes my NAS would not go to "Standby" mode after 10 minutes as I  set it up because it seems that RaspBMC could have been queering it?

Not  sure what exactly went wrong but I can see quite clearly that both HW  and SW improvements are possible. I would urge you to contact the patent  holders ASAP, in order to make the Mark III...

Best regards,

gorski

P.S. Anyone with multiple HDMI switches experience? I have this one in my mind: http://www.amazon.it/Ligawo-%C2%AE-switch-attivo-automaticamente/dp/B002I9LH2Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1382270091&sr=8-1&keywords=ligawo+5x1

I suggest going through the Power / Start-Up section of the RasPi Troubleshooting Wiki.  If you're only seeing the red PWR LED, that only tells you that your power supply is giving you at least 3V or so.  See if the green ACTivity LED is flashing solid as RasPi comes up -- that tells you the CPU is accessing the SD card.  If you're not getting ACT, it could be that the OS image was not written correctly to the SD card.  Also, if you're not getting ACT you'll see nothing on video since that requires a good OS (or at least kernel) image.

I successfully use a 3-1 HDMI Switcher which looks like this one.  It automatically switches when you turn on a new input, plus there's a manual override.  I use it with a DVI-D monitor.

Does the network LED flash when starting up?  If the green LEDs flash, the Pi itself might be OK.

Have you tried a different TV?   Early on, there were reports on the Raspberry Pi forum that some televisions HDMI ports suffered an upset if the Pi was unplugged or plugged in whilst the TV set was switched on.

Thank you both - I will try again but I have my suspicions... Different OSs, NOOBS twice.... hmmm....

Besides, other devices suffer no such problems, so...

I changed HDMI ports and so on...

    We'll see...

Only the PWR red led is ON, sadly...

Tried aother SD card, as well, with RaspBMC - nothing...

    Gor Ski,

Exactly how many volts do you measure between the +5V and GND pins of the header?

Could be very simple, it was for me.  Originally I had 4.7 volts and many troubles like yours.  I tried several supplies and found one that gives +5.02V on the header and now mine runs for weeks.

Measure the voltage, tell us what you get.

Sorry, no such tool in my home...  I am no electrician, you see....

I just think that such a piece of technology must come with properly made PSU, optimised for all possible demands that HW could be put under (HDD, wireless keyboard, HDMI, LAN, whatever else....) - these improvisations with incompatible, insufficient PSUs are so unbecoming, for a great project, such as this!

    Just my 2 pence...

WHEN DID YOU PLUG IN THE SD CARD

IF YOU PLUGGED IT IN WHEN THE RASPI WAS ON THERE IS YOUR PROBLEM

Had I done that I wouldn't have said that I was "pleasantly surprised as to how RaspBMC from NOOBS package worked", now would I?

Have you tried a different power supply? And have you tried the RCA instead of HDMI? Also use a full SD Card as some micro with adapter may not work.

Hi Gorski, just a thought, and sorry if you already tried this, but I see you mentioned you got a keyboard.  Have you tried unplugging it? I've had some different keyboards cause problems, especially wireless ones because some draw more power than the Pi can handle. Small ones like 'Rii' keyboards work well, but full size ones tend to cause power issues. Also as others have mentioned power supply is key. Many mobile phone supplies provide insufficient power. I always try to use ones with 5-5.25v and 1A or more.
