My lovely RaspberryPi is dead...

Former Member
Former Member over 12 years ago

I was so looking forward to it and I was pleasantly surprised how the  RaspBMC from the NOOBS package worked, I have even bought a wireless  keyboard for it ( http://www.totalhtpc.com/logitech-k400r-wireless-touch-keyboard-review/ ) but...

The problem started about a week ago, when I had to unplug  everything to get the image going, as it was all stuck. Several reboots  and it started working again but all that unplugging and plugging it  back again - maybe it was the electricity somehow damaging some of the  HDMI/composite circuitry?

I can see  that it is powered up (there is red light inside) but neither HDMI, not  Composite cables give me any image whatsoever, on the TV.

I  have reformatted and copied the NOOBS files to the SD card, as  described on your pages - but I get no system booting in any way. Not a  flicker of an image on my TV.

The SD card seems OK, as I have dealt with it in my laptop without a problem.

I also tried other OSs, like RaspBMC alone, as well as OpenELEC. Alas, to no avail. The same applies.

I have tried different ports and different cables. Not a squeak.

Therefore, I must conclude it is the HW that is faulty.

Please, instruct me how to return the Pi to you.

A refund is preferable to "repair and return", at this point. No response from "sales" at Fernell, sadly... Just forwarded it to the other email...

========================================

In addition, I hope this might help a bit...

I  have read that Pi  might be susceptible to varying voltage/electricity problems. I have a  Belkin safety multiple extension cord, with serious protection against  electricity surges. So, can it still be an electrical mishap?

Or is it simply the power supply issue, as some here have suggested, in which case we would need a really good one, properly advertised here and on sales website...

May  I also suggest a ON/OFF switch, as a good idea, which may go  a certain  way towards preventing this from occurring. I understand that it only  uses very little electricity but I think this is beside the point.  Sometimes my NAS would not go to "Standby" mode after 10 minutes as I  set it up because it seems that RaspBMC could have been queering it?

Not  sure what exactly went wrong but I can see quite clearly that both HW  and SW improvements are possible. I would urge you to contact the patent  holders ASAP, in order to make the Mark III...

Best regards,

gorski

P.S. Anyone with multiple HDMI switches experience? I have this one in my mind: http://www.amazon.it/Ligawo-%C2%AE-switch-attivo-automaticamente/dp/B002I9LH2Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1382270091&sr=8-1&keywords=ligawo+5x1

    Gor Ski,

I have an, "extreme" computer sitting next to my desk that I built.  It cost me well over $3000.00 but, like I said, it is extreme!

I also have the Raspberry Pi sitting on my desk that I paid $35.00 for.

The power supply that I built, just for the $35.00 Raspberry Pi, has a torroidal transformer with dual output leads, 4 voltage regulators that I put together,

a built in 4 port USB hub and an internal cooling fan.  The power supply alone probably cost twice what I paid for the Pi.

My point here is, if you expect something to work under all conditions, you may have to pay just a few dollars more for it. So, before returning what you think is a piece of junk, unplug all of your peripherals and turn it on.  I too feel you don't have enough power to run what you've put together.

If all that you're getting is a red power light, then your Pi isn't trying to load the OS.  Hence, nothing is going to work...

    I have a similar - but different - power-supply issue.

Using RaspbMC my RPi model B works just fine.

But! using Raspbian - it reboots after about 3 minutes.

    It didn't used to - I did a complete rpi-update, then an

apt-get update, and finally an apt-get upgrade. Since then,

it simply reboots. Has the power-handling software had

a rejig? Update/Upgrade the only thing that has changed

    on my RPi'B'.

All USB items are routed thru a Belkin 7-port powered USB hub.

    I have upgraded from a 5V 1200ma PSU to a 5V 2A Nexus 7

PSU. The Video Out is via HDMI into a 55" Samsung LED TV.

All 5 lights are on - 1 red, 2 amber, 2 green - one of the greens

winks as data is being read (?) As I say, RaspbMC works, so it

might not be the fuse at fault. All the SD-card 'springs' are OK.

Nothing is hanging-off the PCB (dated 2011 and made in China).

What to do - get a multimeter? Or replace? (I've owned it 4 months).

Hi John, to me it sounds more like the Raspbian image is messed up somehow, or something went wrong with the SD card (assuming its a different one than your Raspbmc image). I'd first try a different SD card with Raspian installed from scratch, or if you're not concerned with loss of data simply reinstall Raspian/NOOBS on the existing (potentially problematic) SD. I'm not exactly an expert on Linux so I don't know how/what might have caused the rebooting problem. I think you can hold Shift during a bootup to go straight into raspi-config, maybe it's overclocked or something and that's causing the reboot?  With the information at hand I don't think it's a hardware problem, unless it does turn out to be the SD card itself.

    Hi John,

I just read Matt's reply to you and have to agree with what he's telling you.

when I experienced a similar problem, I found that it was the OS that I put on the SD card.

After 3 or 4 tries of getting the OS onto the same SD card it finally worked ok.

Another thing I found out was that putting the last update on the SD card is what was causing all my problems.

I sure hope that the info between Matt and myself help you with that problem.  Good Luck...

Well, I tried everything, a different PSU, another installation from scratch on the SD card that came with Rpi, another SD card, different image - you name it... It didn't work.

So, I sent it back, as agreed with the seller, and they promised to replace it...

Nothing. Not a word. Repeated emails. Nada!

A loooong time ago now - mid November...

    Similar experiences?

    What am I to do?

No, not a sausage, sadly... Really  not cool, at all!!!!

And I asked for a replacement of the Pi, PSU and memory card, as they all could be faulty but not the little plastic case, of course.

    Hello Gor Ski,

I guess from your post you mean you bought your Pi here and there was no support for your problems.

I don't know the exact detail, but I assure you I have been doing business with Farnell for 20+ years and I never had any problem with them.

Even once, a long time ago, I had a problem with a etch/wash tank like this 500-005 - MEGA - ETCH/WASH TANK | Farnell España - but an older model - and I had it replaced before I sent them the faulty one. And it's a 500$ part.

I am sorry  your experience  with them, is not as good as mine.

I don't know how you sorted your return, but you have to go to your account page and use the return link. There you ask for a return auth number. Once you have got that number, just send them the faulty device and in two days you will have a new one shipped to you.

When did you bought the Pi ? Their return policy is 21 days from sale date.

Have you made those steps before your return ?

Perhaps if you read the thread a bit more, you would have see I wrote this:

And still, after who knows how many emails, after all this time - not a word from them...image
