idle and memory leaks

Former Member

I notice if I leave a script running for a couple of days in the python ide that the pi slowly runs out of memory, yet the same script running not in the idle shell shows no sign of memory leakage at all . why is this ? I'm using the noobs dist python 2.7 and have checked for updates. quitting idle releases the memory.

its not problem I'm just curious

It seems that python < 2.5 have indeed memory leaks in idle http://pythonhosted.org/Pympler/tutorials/muppy_tutorial.html but 2.7 should not have them.

Have you tried to manually invoke the garbage collector on memory intensive methods ?

You - may be - can pick what is causing it just adding a "gc.collect()" - you need to "import gc" of course - on those methods where the timing is not critical but have created many or big objects in memory.

thanks for that iago  , I have added gc.collect() to my script . I will leave it run for a day and let you know if it makes any difference

gc.collect() reduced the memory leak but it has not stopped it entirely  , still looses 1mb / hour .

I guess that idle is just not the environment to run long term scriptrs
