Raspberry Pi NoIR camera board

Hi,

This is my second attempt to get a PI camera working. After the first attempt I returned the camera on the assumption that it’s faulty. However I get the same results with this newly acquired camera.

Basically I get the following when I run the command:-

  pi@raspberrypi ~ $ raspistill -o image.jpg

mmal: mmal_vc_component_create: failed to create component 'vc.ril.camera' (1:ENOMEM)

mmal: mmal_component_create_core: could not create component 'vc.ril.camera' (1)

mmal: Failed to create camera component

mmal: main: Failed to create camera component

mmal: Camera is not detected. Please check carefully the camera module is installed correctly

I have updated and upgraded the system. Set the raspi-config. Check and re-inserted the cables but to no avail.  I have run out of options and not sure what to do next.  Any suggestions?

PS: I have tried a new RPi mother board to eliminate the RPi unit but I get the same results.

Regards

AW

The camera is more or less directly connected to the GPU. So GPU software has to handle things.

It looks to me as if there is a problem allocating memory on the GPU. So:
    - check that you're running the latest GPU software. (run rpi-update)

    - check that you have the proper GPU/CPU memory split.

    - Check that your camera is properly connected. The FFC might be inserted the wrong way around.

    Hi Roger,

    Thanks for the response.

I have run Update and Upgrade and checked the config, camera enabled, all's OK.

GPU memory is set at 128 which I assume is correct. I have removed and re-inserted the ribbon cable and it is inserted nice and square.

Running raspistill -v -o  test.jpg I get a LED flash on the first run but not on subsequent attempts.

I'm now at a total loss....:(

    Regards

    Andre

During the Catch Santa, one of the contestants found the ribbon from the sensor to the board (the bit with SUNNY on it) had partially popped out of its socket.image

maybe this might be the cause.

    Hi Mark,

Thanks for the feedback. I re inserted the "sunny" module, made sure it's seated properly but unfortunately I get the same results.

I would test with the camera completely disconnected.

This would provide valuable information: If the reaction of the system is exactly the same, it could be that there is completely no connection (i.e. wiring error) or that the module is completely dead (maybe ESD?).

But if the raction is different, there is at least a partial connection to the camera.

You say you have checked the cable, and at one point you say the led went, so we know they are the right way around.

I was wondering have you checked the cable at the camera end since it comes already installed.

You simply pull up on the edge of the connector and insert it just as you would for the board end.

For what its worth this is what mine looked like.

I also noted that on one of my RPi, there was an adhesive sticky across the camera socket, which unless you were aware could go in with the cable and cause headaches.

Failing the ability to try it on known RPi and camera, you'll probably need to return it.

I think that most of the different suggestions are sensible and may well be the problem for an arbitrary camera problem but since you have had 2 cameras,

have checked all the connections and software updates I would suggest trying the camera on another Raspberry Pi since from what I've seen this is the only thing you

    haven't swapped out yet

    John

He has tried a new board.

(I missed the second camera, so yes there is something else)

    Andre

You haven't specified what OS you are running.

Also did the update and upgrade actually work.

I've seen it where it looks like its doing it's thing only to find that its not actually connecting to the internet at all.

In that case with two boards and two cameras we must assume it's unlikely to be a real hardware fault.

Software or use age seems more likely!

    Hi All,

    Thanks again for the support.

One question was raised on the operating system. I'm running NOOBS 1.3 and I run the RPi headless using VNC Viewer. Running Putty and Ultra VNC viewer produced the same result. I don't think that running headless or direct HMI and keyboard will change the results although I have not tried this.

    I did the following again:-

MARK  These was a yellow adhesive sticky across the camera socket but not causing any issues. I removed it just in case and reinserted the ribbon cable. I did not see any adhesive sticky on the camera ride.

    Ran the following:-

         sudo apt-get update

         sudo apt-get upgrade

         sudo raspi-update

sudo raspi-config, selected enabled from the camera option and rebooted.

I would say that the upgrade and update worked but I still get the same results.

Roger - You suggested I run the system with the camera removed and look at the results. Interesting I get the same results. This points to either a faulty camera module or a poor ribbon cable connection. Although I do get a LED flash when I run raspistill -v -o test.jpg. But I get the LED flash only once and does flash when I run the command again.

As mentioned before I have tried the camera on both my raspberry pi's. unfortunately they both run the same OS - NOOBS 1.3. However, in a way this proves that the Raspberry PI hardware is fine. The camera module could still be suspect and/or OS could be suspect.
