Raspberry Pi NoIR camera board

Hi,

This is my second attempt to get a PI camera working. After the first attempt I returned the camera on the assumption that it’s faulty. However I get the same results with this newly acquired camera.

Basically I get the following when I run the command:-

  pi@raspberrypi ~ $ raspistill -o image.jpg

mmal: mmal_vc_component_create: failed to create component 'vc.ril.camera' (1:ENOMEM)

mmal: mmal_component_create_core: could not create component 'vc.ril.camera' (1)

mmal: Failed to create camera component

mmal: main: Failed to create camera component

mmal: Camera is not detected. Please check carefully the camera module is installed correctly

I have updated and upgraded the system. Set the raspi-config. Check and re-inserted the cables but to no avail.  I have run out of options and not sure what to do next.  Any suggestions?

PS: I have tried a new RPi mother board to eliminate the RPi unit but I get the same results.

Regards

AW

You have indicated that you're using NOOBs 1.3, but which version of OS did you elect to install.?

    Hi Mark,

Not sure where to check this. I assumed that when you run Udate and Upgrade the latest version will be loaded. I thought that NOOBS give you the option to run either RASPBMC or Raspbian. Unless I have it wrong.

    Regards

NOOBs software is a collection of OS, that you choose from a menu.

    https://github.com/raspberrypi/noobs/blob/master/README.md

As far as i know the camera only works with raspbian distribution.

That is interesting. Not being an expert I thought that NOOBS manages the OS’s and boots the OS selected or if no selection is received will install the last selected OS.

Having said that the Raspbian OS should be same under NOOBS compared to a vanilla installation. But then I may not be correct in my assumption.

I’ll load Raspbian OS on a spare SD-card and see if I get the same issue.

    regards

    Andre

You're right that you select a distribution and it is loaded for you.

Sorry haven't tried a restore, but your assumption seems logical.

I'm not an authority, so not sure how one checks the distribution .... however some digging found this.

and this command which should tell something

On a Raspbian or Debian system, "dpkg --print-architecture" will return "armel" for Debian and "armhf" for Raspbian.

As the next peoster said ... you learn something every day.

I was wondering if anyone knows. Does the NoIR camera work in the UV spectrum? Can I use UV LEDs. I have it working in IR.

Thanks in Advance for any positive feedback.

Most silicon cameras are sensitive to UV but much less than IR which is why they have IR cut filters and not UV ones.

So you could use the LEDs, you'll probably need something in front that will block the optical and IR to give the UV a chance to dominate.

    Should make some cool pictures!

I was thinking that I could build a full spectrum camera. Like what is used on ghost adventures. Does the NoIR camera have any filters?

    Thanks
