Arduino + RPi:  Get notified when mailman delivers to your postal mailbox.

electronichamsters

A battery powered, wireless Arduino sensor is mounted under a postal mailbox to sense when mailbox door is opened.  Raspberry Pi receives signal and plays an audio cue, as well as sends you an email.  Complete with sophisticated home automation interface called OpenHAB.

Sounds like a really interesting project, i'm sure this can be accomplished without the use of a Raspberry Pi but using maybe a Spark core instead.

Hello, That sounds fascinating. Never heard of the Spark Core previously.

Found some details on the project here but think this is a little beyond for a newbie such as myself. Need to get started on some basic Arduino and RaspberryPi projects in the first instance I'm thinking.

Well, I'd still need the Raspberry Pi - it's running the OpenHAB platform for all the home automation goodness.  With the Spark Core, I guess you can post MQTT messages directly on the ethernet without using the intermediate gateways I'm using when utilizing the RFM69 wireless transceiver.  How well does the wifi enabled spark core do as a battery powered unit?  With the wireless transceiver I'm using, it sleeps pretty efficiently, 100uA in sleep.

I've detailed the foundations of the wireless sensor nodes in this blog post:
