Broken RPi dev kits

davorin
davorin over 11 years ago

As it seems other people have the same problem which have been resolved:

Raspberry Pi • View topic - Compute module not talking

I thought I start a new topic as it is really hardware specific....

Two of the compute modules received today from Farnell are just not usable...as they are broken...

Ubuntu recognizes that some hardware was connected...but fails to communicate as the USB device is broken.

Wonder if other people have/had same issues....

If the boards would have been initially flashed then the error would have been discovered before shipping...

Someone over at raspberrypi.org suggested to not use USB 3.0 ports...

But even directly on an OSX machine with 2.0 USB ports only it shows:

USBF:    322421.165    The IOUSBFamily is having trouble enumerating a USB device that has been plugged in.  It will keep retrying.  (Port 1 of Hub at 0xfa130000)

USBF:    322427.166    AppleUSBEHCI::Found a transaction which hasn't moved in 5000 milliseconds on bus 0xfa, timing out! (Addr: 0, EP: 0)

USBF:    322433.168    AppleUSBEHCI::Found a transaction which hasn't moved in 5000 milliseconds on bus 0xfa, timing out! (Addr: 0, EP: 0)

USBF:    322439.171    AppleUSBEHCI::Found a transaction which hasn't moved in 5000 milliseconds on bus 0xfa, timing out! (Addr: 0, EP: 0)

So no way libusb can use this device...

    Some update...

Apparently the RPi dev kit doesn't like PCs with USB2 and USB3 ports...

The only way (at least for me) is to use a regular Raspberry Pi as a host to initiate the RPi dev kit to become a disk drive....after that it can be plugged in in any PC to "dd" the image..

    ...but that didn't help..

After two hours I stopped the "dd" process....

Also doing the same from a Rasperry Pi isn't successful after over two hours...only shitloads of error messages:

I consider this hardware as serioulsy poorly designed and with a target price of US$ 200 totally overpriced....

Would be interesting to know if it is related to the poor carrier board design or the module itself...

    Hi,

You don't want to be trying to use Ubuntu on the modules, you need to just deal with Rasbian. Ubuntu is primarily built on x86 architecture and Raspbian has the correct kernel modules for the ARM based system. We have managed to get Raspbian working on the modules here.

Ehhm....where did you read I tried to use Ubuntu on the Raspberry Pi development kit????

Anyway..problem was solved when Farnell sent two replacement kits...

And from other people on Raspberry Pi forum I heard that indeed with USB-3.0 hosts you are not able to flash it at all...
