HDMI detection on boot

Last night I set up my Rasberry Pi 2, but in NOOBS I told it to output to rca and I think I checked permamently.

Now when I power it up, despite the HDMI working upon initial startup, it switches to RCA during the boot to Rasbian.

I understand that this is a user error on my part, but I'm having difficulty with the Rasbian monitor prefrences not giving me an option to switch to HDMI.

Is there a way to set up the Raspberry Pi in this manner:

1. Check for HDMI

2. If HDMI is plugged in, switch to HDMI

3. If HDMI is unplugged, switch to RCA

4. Repeat

A technique I would use is the following loop:

Setup for HDMI or RCA or quit if tried all.
Send message to display and wait 5 seconds if no reply go back to 1,
Look for a reply like any key if they want to keep settings.
If not keep, go back to 1 and try another setup
