Serial Communications Question from NOOBIE?

I'm interested in communicating with a serial device using my RPi B+.  I'm not sure about the best way to go about it.  Currently, I am using TeraTerm on Windows PC.  Would like to switch to RPi and suitable communications package.  Can anyone offer suggestions?

  • If you just want ordinary serial port communication via a standard port, then I have been successful with a USB serial interface and the putty program (It's a clone of the Windows PuTTY program).

     

    You need to select serial communication in putty with the correct start and stop bits, parity and speed. You also need to point it to the correct serial device which, for me, is /dev/ttyUSB0. You need to hunt in /dev after you have plugged in the interface USB lead.
