Raspberry Pi Display board

I recently purchased a Raspberry Pi touch display but the kit will not assemble. The display ribbon cable will not slot in the the terminal on the back of the adapter board.

Have a look at The Kitware Blog - Raspberry Pi likes its Camera where you can see the installation procedure of a ribbon cable for the raspberry pi camera.
The display ribbon cable is installed the same way.
The trick is that you have to open the connector, then insert the cable and the close the connector again as shown by the figures.
