I keep seeing advertisements for this "learning" camera but some of the reviews make it sound like it is more hype then actual value. Anyone had a chance to test this with RPi?

I haven't tried it yet but I plan to soon.

It is underpowered compared to what the RPI and BeagleBone Black can do so if you want machine vision with these platforms you could use OpenCV instead. I think perhaps this product's real use is for educational projects with the Arduino (which doesn't have the resources for machine vision).
You're paying for convenience and a simple API basically by off-boarding the processing.
