Starter Kit w/o Raspberry PI

data345
data345 over 9 years ago

I bought a Raspberry PI 2 without the starter kit.

I now see that I need a starter kit, or at least a power supply and a NOOBS card pre-loaded, and DVI cable.  Where can I find these items?

A starter kit w/o the Raspberry PI and enclosure will be fine.

Resources that ELY [Edward Yee, aka USCDADNYC] uses:

    At raspberrypi.org

there are two O/S that ELY has used. each on separate

    uSD, SD cards

    (a)

Raspbian-jessie (SEP2015). This is to run your RaspPi

as a Computer. (add mouse, keybd, Monitor, etc.)

    (aa)

ELY has notes on what text editor, Python Interpreter to

use. And how to use them.

(aaa) The MOOC www.coursera.org has a recurring Python

programming course called "Programming for Everyone

(Python)"-videos by a Prof. at Univ. of Michigan. ELY has

    copies of the videos

    (b)

    *****NOTE*****

    https://minibianpi.wordpress.com/

IS THE ACTUAL SITE WHERE "minibian" IS

    Minibian (Nov 2015). This is a Stripped-down O/S for use(s) that

interface with the Physical World (thru the GPIO Pins) NO keybd,

mouse, Monitor needed. Programming is via Putty (an SSH client).

you connect/program the RaspPi via your Router.

    (bb)

www.udemy.com has a paid course called "Rasp Pi: Full Stack"

I paid $10. (Pricing varies greatly, just try to get it when it is $10)

AAR this course is for Rasp Pi Users that want to interface w/ the

real world. These Lectures (videos) go over what you need to buy,

what you have to download. It is pretty good.

I am in the process of buying a DHT22 Digital Temp & Humidity

Sensor for one of the experiments Cost $10.

    (bbb)

ELY gets his piece parts from element14.com (an offshoot of

    Newark Electronics.)

    ******

As for a Power Supply for RaspPi a 2Amp at 5Volt MicroUSB Power supply

    will do.

BTW you will need a uSDcard/SDcard of at least 8GB. Actually Two such memory cards

if you want to keep your Computer use (Debian) on one memory card AND your Controller-

RaspPi (minibian) on the other memory card.

    To: Al Sparks

PE's link is the place for H/W. I just recv'd my Pi Camera Board yesterday from element14. I bought my RasPi in May 2013. It was a RaspPi Model 1B. The one w/ 26pin (not 40pin) Header Pins. This RaspPi 1B having just two USB2.0  Ports, I mounted it onto an Old USB1.0 Powered Hub. Remember this was in 2013. AAR unless you are a Guru OR under the Tutelage of a Guru, I would suggest again as I did in my earlier Post, that you sign up for the MOOCs, I have described. No, I am not a "Shill" for the House. The udemy.com MOOC "RaspPi: Full Stack" is very Good. The Class Sessions (available on-demand) go over Exactly how to download (for Free) the S/W that you Need. Please Note Again, the Divergent Point Here: 1) Debian for making your RaspPi a working PC w/ Mouse, KeyBoard, and Display (HDMI) OR 2) Minibian for experimenting w/o the Outside World, via the GPIO pins on the 26/40 pin Headers. I use TWO Separate uSD/SD cards. One for Debian, One for Minibian.

HOWEVER THERE IS AN EARLIER DIVERGENCE POINT. 1) Go w/ raspberrypi.org, OR 2) Go w/ IoT (Internet of Things) - which is Microsoft's attempt to stay relevant in things Raspberry Pi. World. Google "Internet of Things Microsoft" for more info.

Any 8GB micro SD card with FAT32 from this list RPi SD cards - eLinux.org .

On a PC (windows/linux) or MAC you can download NOOBS from https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/

Note: Many different OS can run, but Raspbian is most well known and best supported.

As hardware see RPi Hardware Basic Setup - eLinux.org . The USB 1.0 hub will be slow with any USB sticks or drives if they work. Suggest a USB 2.0 hub instead.

ACK that a USB1.0 Hub slows everything down. But this was done in MAY 2013. This was a powered Hub w/ a 7.5Vdc Power Brick. Was able to mount the RaspPi Bd on stand-offs anchored to the  floor of the Hub. Used a 5V Voltage Regulator IC (w/Heat Sink) to provide power to the RaspPi. Being a powered Hub (albeit USB1.0) , I was able to power a USB2.0 Optical DVD External Drive also. After all the Processor in the RaspPi is No Speed Demon. If I want speed I go to my Intel NUC i7, w/ a M.2 SSD (256GB). It boots Win10 up in 10 seconds.

AAR CM: what is your take on Raspberrypi.org Path VERSUS IoT (Internet of Things) Path- the Microsoft attempt to sway RaspPi Users?

Not sure on where you are located and that does change which site you may want to order from.  But here at least is a path that you can then apply toward your Country and it's proper ordering site:

http://www.newark.com/raspberry-pi-accessories?ICID=HP-R1-B1-Rasp-Pi <  This will give you a full list of all sorts of options you can buy.  If you are looking at limiting your self to just a couple specific items this is a good way to go.  If you would prefer a Starter Kit as your Post says:

    http://www.newark.com/adafruit-industries/955/starter-pack-raspberry-pi/dp/44W3510

    Ye Olde Budget Starter Pack:

    http://www.newark.com/adafruit-industries/965/budget-pack-raspberry-pi/dp/44W3511

Honestly, I would not choose either of those and would instead piece it out by what I wanted specifically.  I don't like the 4gb memory card that comes in those and you can get a 8gb Noobs loaded card here:  http://www.newark.com/sandisk/sdsdqu-008g-bmut/memory-microsd-8gb/dp/38Y6470 but if you have access to your own Microsd cards you can always just load your own OS as well.  I like having a WiFi adapter for networking since I never have my Ethernet near where I want to play with my Pi.  Also, what are you using for video?  Easiest is of course HDMI, but you may need to research a bit if you are trying something other since you may need special adapters.

So to answer your question in a straight manner, either of the two top links would work as a Starter Kit without the RPi.  What you really may end up wanting though is up to you and what your end goal of setting it up may be.  :-)

My latest email from Udemy has lots of IT classes at $15 currently.  I believe the RPi one is in that price range right now.

Thx to JK. For addressing the 300-lb Gorilla in the Room. That of who will lead the individual RaspPi user to fruitful endeavors w/ RaspPi. For me,

the Loose Discipline of a MOOC is just right for me. You get to it, when you want-to/have-time-to. BTW I believe the Udemy.com will keep the courses and Access to such Forever(?) OR at least a Long Time.

BTW JK: What is your Take on the 1) IoT versus 2) Raspberrypi.org - path?

This comes down to religion with both sides having their die hards. IMHO use what best fits the task or project, image
