R pi 7" touch screen- D.O.A.- Boot failure

Former Member

Hi - just received the Raspberry Pi 7" touch screen, need some help. I can't get any sign of life at all, cannot tell if screen is defective, or me!

I have been through the help forums on several sites, reviewed the videos, even spent some time on you tube, all I've seemed to accomplish is bricking the R pi as well. It won't boot now.

I have a new Raspberry Pi 2 model B, Raspberry Pi power supply, wireless keyboard, wired mouse, wireless wi-fi adapter (L-B link), 8 gig NOOBS pre loaded card, raspbian OS.

The display came partially assembled out of the box. I have checked and rechecked all four ribbon cable connectors, the GPIOs (#2 & 6) are jumpered properly (as shown) connecting the R pi to the adapter board.

Until late last night, the R pi was booting properly, I did have Internet access - all seemed to be in order. I came across some info regarding a need for updates to get screen working with NOOBS, things went sour from there. I presently only get a partial boot now, the screen with the four raspberrys appears, some text scrolling, then it goes to a blank screen with a small "underscore"blinking in the corner. I am unable to get a response. I have tried loading in a 32 gig card (new, formatted) with a copy of raspbian on it, I only get a red led, no green at all so this card isn't being read.  I've reinstalled the original noobs 8 gig preloaded card, same partial boot.

I would certainly appreciate any help at all as I don't really have any idea on what to try next!

             Thanks, Kelly

    for Raspbian see:-

Hope so too, if I can make it through  the boot issue, maybe I can tell. Thanks for the link, I have already viewed the "R pi 2 B first time set up -30:59" , I will spend some time and view some of the others. Do you have anything that will help get through the partial boot?

just start with a fresh and upto date image from the Raspberry PI web site and a decient SD card, and verify the display is assembled correctly, finally ensure your using a 2A 5V power supply, not a 1 amp version, or power the Raspberry and the display seperatly

this will ensure you have ample power as the OS starts to turn things on

I have the same experience with the 7" screen.. I got the R-Pi working, did the updates and upgrades.  The upgrades did not have enough room to build indexes.  I purchased a larger SD Card (16GB) which has yet to boot up.  In the process of trying to get this project going I have become fluent in formatting and loading the Raspian image to the SD card using my MacBook Air.  I have one out of 3 cards that will boot.  The two that will not boot seem to go through the process; but, do not display.  I have compared the Config.txt for all three cards...they are all the same.  Where else is the video configuration stored?

    Thank you, Forrest

there is two places, one in the root whe looking at it with windows, one in boot folder when looking with Linux

Not all SD cards are created equal, the PI 2 needs a real class 10 SD card and a fast one if possible, it can make a massive difference in the time to boot etc if you dont follow this advise, and I have had the odd instance when the process never completes

What is aggravating is that the cards (Preinstalled or fresh homemade) all work the first time and then not again: the system boots, then I adjust the configuration and on reboot the screen goes blank and is gone for ever.  I have four cards that came with Raspberry Pi sets and another that I just purchased locally.  All are class 10 cards.

Back to the real issue: the 7" display does not display the boot-up, at best all that happens in a lit screen with no text.  I have a 5" touch screen working on another Pi 2 and my Pi B+ is working nicely.....so I can get the machines running (the B+ is going to be attached to a Oregon Scientific WMR-200; the Pi 2's are for my 9th grade computer applications class....some students wanted to work on "hacking" projects....little did they know that they were going to learn real computer science not just how to use an editor).

    Thanks

Right from Power up, the display should at a minimum show the big Rainbow then dissapear, almost like a mirror to the HDMI

If the PI is booting to the GUI display or command prompt but the display is not working, then check cabling and assembly of the display as there really is nothing more you need to do

and make sure you have a good power cable and power adapter, if your adapter is only 1A then provide a second to power the display on its own, simply remove the 5V jumper lead from the headers and leave the ground (0V) wire

If you watched my videos you will see that from a New imaged SD Card of Raspbian or Noobs, as soon as power is applied you get something on the LCD

    Regards

    Peter

Lo and behold, I went back and reseated all of the ribbon cables and the touch screen works.  I am till having problems with two of the SD cards; but, now all three Pi's are working. I will get the weather station on line in the next week or so.  Thank you for your videos and conversations.

image, As you found out the hard way, it is critical that the connectors are installed correctly, this is why I created the detailed video to help people with that, Happy you resolved the issue.

On the issue with the SD Cards, Raspbian has a new release (Feb 2016) that has specific fixes for SD cards, you might want to give it a go to see if your issues are resolved.
