Communications interfaces in Raspberry pi 3

Former Member
Former Member over 9 years ago

Hello everyone!

I want to connect my RaspPi 3 with a GPS (NEO-6M) and a GPRS (SIM800L) module. I have looked the datasheets of them and i founded that the GPS module supports UART, SPI and DDC (I2C compilant), and the GPRS module supports I2C. Where can i find what communications supports the Raspi 3's GPIO in order to look if i can connect it with these modules?

Sorry for my poor english.

Thanks!

The Raspberry PI supports all of these protocols and interfaces. The easies will probably be I2C, and SPI, then UART Serial.

I2C needs 2 wires + a ground connection. you will probably tap off the 3V3 supply from the PI to power your devices as well, so a total of 4 wires.

SPI will use 4 wires + power and ground, the 4 wires will be Serial In, Serial Out, Clock and a Chip select

UART Serial will be 2 wires + gnd and power again, one for serial out, one for serial in. the reason this is the last ont he list is bacause it takes more pre configuring to get it running but once it is done it is also easy to use.

the biggest interfacing hurdle is making sure the voltages for your devices and the PI are compatable. The PI runs its GPIO at 3C3, if your devices are also 3V3 then your good to go, just wire up and follow the numerous examples available on line for using your selected interface.

you may have to adapt code for a different device if you can not find a specific example for your hardware.

I forget to mention that each module are in a board and i don't know what interfaces are exposed in them. The modules are:

Modulo Gps Ublox Neo6 Antena Activa Bateria Respaldo - $ 500,00 en MercadoLibre

Modulo Gsm Gprs Sim800l Con Stack Tcp/ip Arduino Pic Arm Avr - $ 449,90 en MercadoLibre

    Thanks!

The sim8xx and sim9xx modules interface most easily over the serial port. called UART in some circumstances.

I sure hope those dollars are not US dollars. Those modules  should be obtainable for about $10 to $20 (US).

Mexican Peso i believe at $18.27 to the US $ so that would make it $27.36, so still quite expensive, better getting from EBay with free shipping perhaps ?
