Power supply

Hi,

I have a display board which has a USB socket so I can power my raspberry pi. The display claims to need 3-4A but seemed to work fine with 2A when I tried with an adapter I had. I was also intending to power an rgb led strip with the same power supply (the 2A adapter was from this kit). I think I may be ok with a 6A supply but probably look at 8A to be sure. As the display and lights may be on or off, would I then require a regulated power supply such as this one:

Or would I be better using something like this:

I think I found somewhere which suggested that a dummy load would be needed for using a regulated power supply, would I need one in this case?

Hi c_p,

I wouldn't trust any mains power supply like that, that cost just a few £. There's no short route to this, better to just use a known supply brick if you can find one around the home or buy one from a traceable source, e.g. farnell.co.uk, and it will come with a spec sheet with all the details - it won't be near this price however.

Thanks, thought I had seen a couple of geniune CE marks rather than the fake ones but after seeing the prices on farnell I doubt they're trustworthy. Found this one which seems like it could be reasonable and the datasheet says I don't need any minimum load so I'm happier about using it
