I have a display board which has a USB socket so I can power my raspberry pi. The display claims to need 3-4A but seemed to work fine with 2A when I tried with an adapter I had. I was also intending to power an rgb led strip with the same power supply (the 2A adapter was from this kit). I think I may be ok with a 6A supply but probably look at 8A to be sure. As the display and lights may be on or off, would I then require a regulated power supply such as this one:

Or would I be better using something like this:

I think I found somewhere which suggested that a dummy load would be needed for using a regulated power supply, would I need one in this case?
