Raspberry pi doesn't work

ltimberlake
ltimberlake over 9 years ago

I received a raspberry pi 2 for my birthday from my parents, and I have tried multiple times to get it to work. I've tried installing multiple OS on multiple micro SD cards. I even bought a new power supply specifically for the raspberry pi even though the one i had before probably shoul've worked. The lights show up on the pi (red and green lights) but nothing shows up on the tv. I have tried multiple HDMI cords with multiple TVs. i have no receipt, what do you recommend i do?

Laptops are notorious for not supplying the full USB specified current (500mA?) to USB sockets, especially when in battery mode. Have you tried running your set-up from the rear USB ports of a desktop (some case mounted ports are under specification)?

I appreciate that dragging the tower around slightly misses the point, but it will prove the viability of the Pi set-up.

If the desktop works, try the laptop on mains power. If your laptop has USB 3, this might provide higher current.

Ack the problem w/ external USB 3.0 Hubs (regular/OTG -On The Go) that may/may-not have their own Power Brick. WRT to USB 2.0 (which has only 4 conductors: +5V, Data-, Data+, Grnd), I have made a USB 2.0 Test Cable that Breaks-out the Leads from which I can divert/disconnect/continue/introduce the 4 leads. With this Test Cable I can supply +5V from another Pwr Brick, essentially making an Un-powered Hub into a Powered One.I just have to make sure I have all my Grnd = Ground Connections are connected together. I can try to post my Test Rigs (on Photos) IF there is any Interest. I also Ack that many problems are introduced by using external USB hubs, many Discussion Threads here at e14 attest to that. But the RaspPi Zero has only One USB device Connection, so what choice do I have? WRT to the youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aL1pWI2K60w . I have ordered a Micro-B-plug-TO-Full-Size-USB-A Adapter (which purports to be a OTG Adapter). We shall see?. Backtracking a Bit, I do the Youtube video configuration again (From Scratch). i.e. get the latest Raspian (I hope the Pixel GUI doesn't affect what I am doing?), The other problem is that I only have Win10 PC's. The Youtube method was using Win8/8.1? I still have my Win8 disc and along w/ a spare HDD, I can make a Win8 PC (w/i an hour). BUT is all this worth the trouble for a RaspPi Zero (which I bought for $0.99 USD)? I am Not a practising EE, but I have a BSEE from the early 70's. I am just a Hobbyist.

TS = 12:24PM 14OCT16. Just created a uSDcard w/ Raspian -Jessie w/ Pixel. I see I see the Blind Man said to his Deaf Dog. No wonder the dust-up about Raspbian Jessie w/ Pixel. It is akin to the Images that Win10 displays. Don't have time to comment more on the disputed Licensing/Copyright issues. But can appreciate why everybody is riled-up.  AAR w/Raspian-Jessie W/ Pixel (2016-09-23) I get different Indication on the RaspPi Zero HDMI Display (b/f the Pixel SplashScreen). Something about USB. In which case I'll wait for my OTG Adapter b/c this will connect to my Hub. We shall see. But Not till next week when my ordered Adapters/cables arrive.

TS = 1:19PM EDT 14OCT16. Used my Test Rig w/ my Bidul USB3.0 Hub + RJ45. This made my Bidul a Powered Hub. Same Problem: No response from either USB Mouse or USB Keyboard. I Know it is a Powered Hub b/c I have a Portapow USB+DC power Monitor. I see a jump from 4.8Vdc TO 5.01 Vdc

I did all H/W testing w/o having my OTG Adapter. May try the URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aL1pWI2K60w  This is having the RaspPi Zero attached to a USB Port on a PC/Laptop.

TS = 2:33PM EDT 19OCT16. I recv'd and tried my OTG Adapter Startech Micro SD to Micro USB / USB OTG Adapter Card Reader | MSDREADU2OTG | Startech . It did not work when used in conjunction the YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aL1pWI2K60w  Remember that I am running Win10 and the video is using Win8.1. Friday 21OCT16 I'll create an Win8.1 PC environment. Results to follow.

TS = 24OCT16 10:12PM My RaspPI Zero did NOT work as per YouTube Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aL1pWI2K60w When I matched the operating parameters (i.e. Win8). Well, when all else fails, read the Manual. But there is No Manual. I guess I will have to read the Wiki on OTGs On The Go Adapter/Hub(?) Maybe I can use a 4.7Kohm Pull-Up/Pull-down Resistor to FORCE the Issue? I am thinking of pin 5 on the USB-micro-B Receptacle on the RaspPi Pi Zero. IDK b/c at the official RaspPi Site there are schematics but NONE for the RaspPi Zero. On a parallel path, I will view other you tube videos w/ an eye on BUYING the OTG Adapter/Hub mentioned in the Video. I am desperate, will buy anything (w/i reason: inexpensive cost)

I watched the video! Now I see the issue. It's nothing to do with the hardware. I found this amazing tutorial on how to set the Zero up as a range of USB devices.

    https://learn.adafruit.com/turning-your-raspberry-pi-zero-into-a-usb-gadget/overview

Here's the page dealing with Ethernet.

    https://learn.adafruit.com/turning-your-raspberry-pi-zero-into-a-usb-gadget/ethernet-gadget

I have not compared it to the video, but I hope it can get you sorted. At least, it's the 'manual' you were looking for.

    The site goes on to list the following;

    Other Modules! by lady ada

Serial and Ethernet are the easiest to get going but they are far from the only gadgets the Linux kernel supports. You can also try such options as:

    • Mass storage (you can have the Pi appear as a 'USB key' disk drive ) - note, we didn't get this up and running smoothly, it enumerated but disk access to the backing file didn't work on our windows machine
    • MIDI - shows up as a 'native' USB CDC MIDI device
    • HID - appear to the host computer as a mouse/keyboard/joystick
    • Audio - Show up as an audio/speaker device & line in as well?
    • Composite - a mix of serial/ethernet/mass storage composite devices is available. Note that this may work on a Mac or Linux but for windows you'd need a custom driver
    • Printer, webcam, etc - There's about a dozen more options

For more details, check out the USB gadget API framework page

That filled my head with dozens of amazing ideas, all of them impracticable! This is way too cool not to make use of.

To RL: Thx for the Links. I will check them out w/i 2 days. I will post my results. BTW you  used the word "sorted", which leads me to believe you are Anglo (UK, Australia, NZ, possibly India, Pakistan, etc.)  AAR if you are outside the US (where I am) microsoft.com MAY/MAY-NOT have on their site:

"makecreat" available. (Yes makecreat w/o an "e" at the end). W/ makecreat one can put listed s/w onto a FlashDrive that will upgrade Win10 ver1511 TO Win10 ver1607. My suspicion is that One can also use this Flash Drive to upgrade from Win7/8/8.1. TO Win10. EVEN THOUGH the Free upgrade Period ended in Late July(?). BUT IT STILL HAS TO BE A QUALIFIED UPGRADE. i.e. the O/S you are upgrading from MUST a vaild Product Key for that version of Win-O/S.

Just installed Pixel dated Sept 23 2016 on a older(no camera interface) Rpi Zero with no problems. Just need to get WiFi and such setup.

Just an after thought, I am using an OTG hub with one USB port to a keyboard with two hubs (one for mouse) giving a fair amount of distance.

USCDADNYC reply>> On RaspPi Zero v1.3 (w/camera connector) I have brought up Pixel (Raspbian Jessie 23SEP16) also. On a connected HDMI Monitor I get to the Pixel GUI. BUT non of my attached USB KeyBd or USB Mouse function. Between the RaspPi Zero USB Port (NOT the USB PWR IN) I have a OTG Hub(?) gotten from Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019H86OFU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

IDK whether this product is a OTG Hub OR NOT?

On a parallel track, I am trying get the RaspPi Zero to connect as an add-on to a WIN10 Laptop/PC thru

A USB Port. For my money, This is the preferred method to get the RaspPi Zero “up” b/c my aim is to

Get the Zero functional as IOT device. Ergo the Least amount of Attached (USB) Devices, the Better
