GPIO & Video

So I am really new at the whole Raspberry Pi scene and have only made one project thus far but am feeling rather brave. I just need one question answered to see how hard my plan may be.

 

When using the GPIO pins for video output, (IE a hat) is it still possible to attach other peripherals? If so, how? Any good tutorials / how to's on the subject?

    Hi Patrick,

     

    It is likely that the HAT uses just some pins (specifically, the SPI pins, and possibly the I2C pins), so you're free to use the remainder. (In fact you could also still use the I2C since it is a serial bus with spare capacity for adding on additional hardware). You have the physical challenge of connecting to the board if the display HAT doesn't have protruding pins to connect your additional hardware, but that can be resolved in various ways (e.g. just solder a few wires onto the HAT.

    I'm not sure there is a specific tutorial on using a video HAT with additional hardware, but the first step would be to examine your video HAT documentation to see what connections it uses. If you can post a link to the documentation, it will be a straightforward task hopefully to examine what connections can be used.
