GPIO & Video

So I am really new at the whole Raspberry Pi scene and have only made one project thus far but am feeling rather brave. I just need one question answered to see how hard my plan may be.

 

When using the GPIO pins for video output, (IE a hat) is it still possible to attach other peripherals? If so, how? Any good tutorials / how to's on the subject?

    Hello Williams, 

     

    better if you explain what do you have in mind image Some project design?

     

    In a general view the answer is yes - despite some hats does not have the second connector to transport the pins outside, for obvious reasons. But in this case you can solder your wires directly on top of the Hat. Every HAT is different as far as I know and you should see in the HAT technical description or datasheet etc. what are the used pins. Then, excluding these, if there are not some strange exceptions you can use all the remaining ones.

     

    Just consider the following: it is important not only the PINs your had (or shield or anything else) are used but what is their function. I list some examples below.

     

    1. If power pins are used you should take in account that adding other circuitry the power should not be higher than the maximum declared from the PI
    2. if the SPI protocol is used or I2C you should see what is the address of the chip select pin used by the HAT and you should not use the same address(es) to avoid conflicts in the buffer
    3. if the PWM signals are used you have not them available for other uses

     

    etc. Every project is almost a separate case and probably a solution can be found anyway.
