NOOB: Rasberry Pi or Arduino - Larson Bar controlled by smartphone bluetooth

I realize that the following project is not a beginner project.  And I am a beginner.  However, before I spend $ and time w/ either Rasberry Pi or Arduino, I'd like some input.

 

My final objective (who knows when I'll get to it) would be to create:

  • a ~20-24" long,  Larson Scanner, with
  • variable intensity low, med, high strength LED
  • Variable speed
  • variable color RGB
  • all controlled by Android or iOS over bluetooth.
  • battery or a/c powered

 

Example of commercial product w/ additional features that I can do w/o (audio and tactile)

 

Example of Ardiuno project of larson scanner, but missing a few features, key:  bluetooth.  I'm considering using Blynk, but bluetooth isn't currently an available option  (Blynk site reports next generation).  Also looking at a kickstarter for LightBlue Bean+

 

As I have no preference for Arduino over Rasberry Pi, some of what I have read in researching this project is that Rasberry Pi may be easier for Droid/iOS integration (those articles may have been out of date).

    Hi,

         Although you have posted in Raspberry Pi, this would work well with Arduino. To add Bluetooth, add a shield for the Arduino like http://www.seeedstudio.com/wiki/Bluetooth_Shield

    In the second demo is the programming to connect to a phone and connect a temperature sensor. But you can ignore that part, since you will use to change the action of the LED's. The Raspberry route is doable with a bit more programming because of Linux things. Nice links btw. Please post what you do for the build. I am sure you can get any help you need here.
