Raspberry Pi Splashscreen issue

Former Member
Former Member over 11 years ago

Hi - I got a Raspberry Pi a while ago now, and whenever I booted it with the "Raspbian Wheezy" Image, it would boot up fine. But, after shutdown/restart, when the Pi attempts to turn back on, my Pi freezes on the coloured RGB splash screen most people see when they boot their Pi. This means I can not restart the device automatically, but have to unplug power, and wait up to 2 minutes "cooldown" before booting my Pi, in which case it works. I'd always assumed this was a bug with my Kernel Image, but after reinstalling/re downloading/re writing etc. I find I still have the same problem! I have switched to NOOBS, which still presents the same issue. Is this an issue with a component like an SD card not being read properly, or in fact there is a problem with the Pi? Again, this happened when I first got the Pi, so should I also be entitled to a new Pi if it is the fault of Element14?

Thanks, Yaseen.

By the way, I have checked the SD slot, which looks fine/intact, and there are some black marks on the SD card's gold contacts. Again, this problem has been omnipresent so I doubt it has anything to do with the wear and tear, either a manufacturing issue with the Pi or my SD card. I assume it is the Pi as my SD card connects fine to my PC via USB adapter.

    hi.

this sounds very much like psu problems. I'go for that first, then the sd card. Maybe just a reinstall?

Can you specify what commands you are using for shutdown/restart?

I'm using "sudo halt", "sudo shutdown-h now", just the general commands. And to restart, "sudo shutdown-r". Just the general ones I've learnt briefly off using linux (which isn't that much at all)

I've already tried reinstall, but I'll definitely give the PSU a try, and maybe double check my SD by using another SD with an image. Thanks!

There may be some useful suggestions at the RasPi Troubleshooting Wiki here (splash screen problems) and here (power problems).  Since you need a "cool-down" period and you didn't need it before, I'm wondering if your polyfuse F3 is misbehaving.  You can check it with a multimeter using the instructions in the second link.

I have had a similar issue, which might be worthy to try this solution.

My rPi, last year would not reboot properly.  I had purchased multiple Pi's so I was fortunate to be able to cross-check the issue; swap cards and hardware.

For this particular issue, it was the SD card that was a problem.  A card which I already had in my bucket of spare parts, which worked for a few days until this occurred.  The other cards I had verified with the compatibility list before purchasing new cards.  All those worked with no problems.  This one was a 2gb card from a dead camera.  Not listed in the compat chart, and possibly did not work well with the Pi.

The problem followed the card when changing the Pi it was inserted into.  Thus I made that assumption.  Rebuild the SD on a different card, and the problem went away, never returned.  Using the questionable 2gb card again, built a new image on it, and again I had another problem, this time would not boot due to a failure in the partition table.  That card is now back in the spare part bucket.

I think you would be safer giving this SD card the Bob Widlar treatment, as told by the late, great Robert A Pease:

We still have a sign around our lab, “This is not a blacksmith shop.”  There were times when Bob would discover he had wasted a day or two, just because one bad part had screwed up his circuit. He would bring this bad part—a capacitor, a pot, a transistor, an IC, or whatever—over to the vise and lay it on the anvil part. Then he would calmly, methodically beat it with a hammer until the smallest remaining part was indistinguishable from the dust on the floor. Then he would go back to work and get the right answer. He explained that it makes you feel much better if you do this, and, you know that bad part will never come around again and goof you up. He was right, and I recommend that you join me in doing this “Widlarizing” when a bad component fools you. You will feel a lot better.

Thank you for your response, in the end I decided to buy a new card, as I had suspicions that my current SD card was a counterfeit - when it started falling apart. I'm pretty sure it will work now, and even if it doesn't, boot_delay=1 seems to help a lot of people. Thanks anyway!

Thanks for the reply - I have bought an SD card directly from SanDisk, thinking my current SD card was probably a counterfeit, and yeah... I have not yet tested it though. But I have high hopes for it to work image.
