Transcend 16gb SD card issues...

I purchased 2 Transcend 16GB Class 10 SDHC Card (TS16GSDHC10), used the create SD card utility on my Ubuntu computer loaded the 3.2.4 version of openelec on it and was off to the races.  Worked a couple of days on getting the config correct and used it to stream videos from my media server. A couple of weeks go by and the video stopped working so I rebooted it, it wouldn't reboot.  I worked with it for an hour or two checking it with my card reader and backed up up the partitions off the card.  I couldn't get it to boot so I took the other Transcend card formatted it restored the backup I made to it, plugged it into the Pi and it booted perfectly.  Fast Forward a couple of weeks and I got the exact same behavior.  Fortunately I was building a Pi for my son to stream video and purchased 2 Sony 16GB SDHC/SDXC Class 10 UHS-1 R40 Memory Cards (SF16UY/TQMN).  After a month I've had no problem with the Sony cards.  If someone can update the Wiki on the SD cards and put a caution on buying the TS16GSDHC10 version of the Transcend cards it will probably help someone else looking for a good SD card.  Interestingly enough I try the Transcend cards every once in a while and they boot and run for a few days before crapping out again.  I think it could be a heat related issue, but I haven't been able to say that with certainty, the environment the cards are in has good air circulation and stays below 70deg F.  I'd be interested in anyone having a similar issue with this card, and after reading a few posts on SD related issues I'll inspect the Transcend cards closely to see if there are any physical issues with them...

Maybe the Transcend cards aren't making as good contact as the Sony cards.  One possible mechanism: maybe they have slightly thinner internal PC boards, conductors, and/or electroplating thickness.  So if your SD socket is iffy, it might work better with Sony.  I've heard of a people having trouble with SD cards and when they push on the SD card so that the contacts are tighter the problem goes away.  I've suggested putting in a paper or cardboard shim.  Some RasPi SD card sockets are very fragile, so be careful.

Nice!  I'll CAREFULLY give that a try, I have some varying thicknesses of shims, I'll also try the lift technique I noticed in another post...

There is a list of compatible SD cards here http://elinux.org/RPi_SD_cards

I reviewed the SD list rather carefully before I made the Transcend purchase and they were on the list indicating no issues.  I've been a little derelict trying the shim and lift fix but I'll get to it here shortly.  Meanwhile if someone who can update or contact someone who can update the RPi_SD_cards page should make a note that the (TS16GSDHC10) Transcend cards work but are flaky...

Testing is more difficult than you think.

e.g. your card being flakey may mean that you ESD-zapped the card when it was "young". Or the SD card connector. Or maybe you have a software confguration that little other people have.

But yes, your findings are a hint that those cards are flakey. But I'd say it is too early to put them on "don't buy is flakey" list.

I'm not sure I'd put these cards on the "don't buy" list, I've had no issues with them using my card reader and reading and writing to the card from the USB, and I have used them to transfer items requiring an SD card, but the Pi is very finicky on what it will boot with.  It could be a manufacturing issue with the port on my Pi, and for some reason the Transcend card definitely has some issues with that.  I just believe they should be noted for anyone scanning the list for a reliable card to boot their Pi.  The Transcend cards were a good bargain but the Sony cards that I have been using for several months now without issue were also a very good buy, and have not suffered the reliability issues the Transcend cards have demonstrated.

    Hi

I experienced similar issues. SD card worked and the next moment dead as a dodo. It would appear that a section of the memory failed. It would not accept an image not even a image retrieved from a 4Gb disk.

These disks are pretty cheap so not a big deal to replace regularly.
