A new project I have been working on

Hi everyone, my name is Sam. It’s a pleasure to meet you all.

I am stopping by these forums to let you know about a project I have been working on, called Pixeom. I think many of you would find it interesting, and I would be very interested to hear your feedback on it.

Yes, it’s a Kickstarter, and yes it would mean the world to me if you pledged to it, but that is not the primary reason I am here. Since this is the Raspberry Pi discussion section of this forum, I wanted to reach out to the community here and talk to you more about your thoughts on my project.

The link is here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/pixeom/pixeom-the-personal-exchange-device

I want to build a company around this personal cloud device that provides more utility than just accessing your files, with an emphasis on privacy. The device also grows as one large storage pool instead of storage islands that you need to manage. It is currently powered by a Raspberry Pi and OpenStack.

What I was hoping to hear more about from you guys is not only if a product like this would appeal to you, but also more about how you currently manage your personal data. Do you guys prefer paying for a Dropbox subscription? Or are you ok with managing multiple external hard drives?

Thanks guys, I look forward to your responses!

Sam

    Hi Sam,

While it is true that a huge concern is privacy, I couldn't figure out what methods Pixeom employs. There are plenty of cloud application providers who play it very loose with security, so if this is the unique selling point for Pixeom, then it is fair to explain how you're ensuring security (at a minimum the protocols you are using - guessing one of them is SSL using openSSL?), different from the competition. It also seemed odd that keys are transferred in e-mails in the video on the site. How do you ensure that the recipient is the correct user, or does the recipient have to also be a member of the Pixeon service?

Personally I use a number of different services, some commercial. If I really need to transfer files from local storage at home (i.e. if I have data that is not already in a cloud), then there are built-in options in network storage devices (and they do transfer securely). I don't need to do it often, but I can imagine others might, for example with music files. For those who do not use network storage devices currently, I can see that Pixeon is useful.

Also, while an RPI solution may be fine for a home user, I can't see how a 1.1GHz Celeron board that you're offering could support 1000 simultaneous users transferring data assuming the data is secured. Surely the card would be grinding to a halt? I can't see it being an appropriate solution for 1000 user customers, but maybe I'm wrong. Perhaps it could be clarified what 'connecting simultaneously' means.

    Hi Sam,

Its a nice concept of yours.. Its is an example of the power of Raspberry Pi and what one can do with it, With RPi only thing stopping you is your imagination...

I thank Element14 for giving us such a product...

Thank You Saurabh for your kind words. We also have a business edition that with faster specs, meant for small businesses or anyone who plans on having 1000+ visitors connecting to their device simultaneously: Intel Celeron 1.1GHz, 2 GB RAM, 50GB mSATA. (Based on the NUC platform). You can check that out as well on our Kickstarter campaign.
