very interesting addition: looking forward to testing the microphone inputs

This looks really useful.

We are developing a network of open microphones to relay live audio streams from wild places and this could be very significant for our project.

I look forward to trying out the sound card. My only concern is that the microphone in appears to be mono, and the Plug in Power supplied to the mic is quite low; while onboard mics have limitations.

But I have bought one and we will try it out and follow progress with interest.

Thanks.

Best wishes,

Grant (soundCamp)

The headset mic input is mono.

There is a stereo line in, which you could use with a mic pre-amp + two mics.

The onboard DMICs sound very good to my (non-audiophile) ears.

If you want lots of mics some distance away you may be better off with USB options.

    Hi all

Yes, sorry - got overtaken with other stuff.

It's a pity from our point of view that the microphone in is mono. I haven't been able to check the quality yet.

Our aim is to develop a cheap high quality streaming device. Til now of course we have been using the USB to get sound to the Pi, via an external sound card. We can use the Icicle from Blue Microphones, or similar, to bring in mono with an XLR mic and 48V phantom power. But we really want stereo, and especially we want to be able to use binaural microphones. Ie electret condensers with a minjack connnector requiring 5V Plug in Power. The great advantage of this is then the ability to make up very low noise microphones using the EM-172 capsule from Primo (about £10 each, inc). Up to now we have been making do with the Griffic iMic, which is affordable but limited quality.

The decision to go with these mono mic ins aimed at headsets, for gamers I think, is common. Missed opportunities from our point of view for the reasons above.

Maybe something to keep under review.

Will send an update when we get a chance to take forward

    Thanks

    hi pigraham

    good points

I guess though the mics mounted on the Pi card are of limited use: the spacing gives you limited stereo options and it's often convenient to keep the Pi out of the weather and run a cable out to somewhere with less machine noise and more interesting sound - for us, at least.

    thx
