Pass data from PHP form to Python Script - Publish Python results to a PHP page

I am implementing a RPi based Home Automation project where RPi is connected to a Motor Control circuit. The circuit, based on RPi input, drives an AC Motor either Forward or Backwards, so that I can close/open my Window Shades.

I have implemented the whole project and wrote a Python Script that get's raw input from keyboard (via SSH to the RPi) and successfully Opens or Closes the shades.

I want now to convert the console script so that it communicates with a PHP page on the RPi and based on user's input to act accordingly.

As a first version I want to create a PHP input form and pass values of two form variables, direction & duration to two corresponding Python values. The result of the Python script should be submiteb back to the web server and shown to the user's browser.

What is the best/easiest way to pass values from PHP to Python and vice versa?

    You can also use Python with cgi interface on your web server.

    You just need to look where is the cgi directory on your webserver - by default in apache it's cgi-bin - and put there an executable Python script  using Python's cgitb library.

    As example:

    #!/usr/bin/env python

    import cgitb

    cgitb.enable()
    form = cgi.FieldStorage()

    if "direction" not in form or "duration" not in form:
        print "<H1>Form</H1>"
        print "<form method='post' action='/cgi-bin/this-script.py'>"
        print "Direction <input type='text' name='direction'><br>"
        print "Duration <input type='text' name='duration'><br>"
        print "<input type='submit'>"
        print "</form>"
        return

    direction =  form["direction"].value
    duration =  form["duration"].value

    # Continue your script from here
    # For output use Python's print to print HTML to the web server's standar output
    #....

    Good day Iago,

    Your reply was really helpful and pushed me to the correct direction.

    I faced some difficulties though which I overtook.

    I am currently working on a detailed blog post about how I implemented my project and when ready I will post it as a reply to this thread.

    Hi Strattos;

    I am building a solar power system for my house.  That is an excuse to put a Home Control System on-line so I can monitor and control from my Domain at Fatcow.com.  You mentioned that you will publish your solution at your site.  Would you please e-mail me when you have that?  I would be glad to share my development as well.  I am using a Raspberry Pi with a Gert board.  My first pass will monitor voltages and currents in my solar system and wish to control inverter on/off and later I would like to add my security system monitor and control.  My e-mail is dbasberg@comcast.net.  My name is Doug Basberg.  I am an electrical engineer (retired).  I am just learning PHP, CGI, PERL, and Python, so your info will be of major help.

    Thanks, Doug
