I need some advice on Raspberry Pi for my son who is interested in Robotics.

My son is interested in Robotics. He is 15 and has already worked on Raspberry Pi with some friends at school. I would like to get him a Robotics starter kit to begin doing his own projects at home, but I have no clue about this stuff. So I was told to join this group for some advice. Can anyone recommend to me what I need to get…the RPI module on its own does not go very far…so what else do I need to order? Anyone out there who can help me?

Would be very grateful for advice.

The raspberry pi has no more poser to control stuff than the arduino, the strength of the pi is on the programing side, you can do a lot of cool and jaw dropping stuf with the way you make programs.

As for the hardware side its just an arduino with a pc all in one, recommend you focus on the programing side not the hardware.

For a simple robot you would need some servos and sensors, here are links to both Micro Servo Motor SG90 9g RC Robot Helicopter Airplane Controls | eBay

5pcs Ultrasonic Module HC SR04 Distance Measuring Transducer Sensor for Arduino | eBay

Keith I think you need to contribute to the conversation, if you direct folk more to what you are intending to achieve  then you can expect better more informative replies. I don't see a link to a Servo as productive as it really doesn't show you how to connect it etc.

    Dear Friends,

I have just come back from a trip and I am so surprised at all the helpful comments regarding my question. I have read through them all, and have looked up your suggestions. Firstly I take the point of John and Omar that my son should concentrate on the programming side. Luckily, he has already learnt some Python and so he will need to further his knowledge in that area. Also, he has done a small school project with the Raspberry Pi, which means that he should continue down that avenue. In order to kick start things, Romilly has certainly given an interesting suggestion with the Little Robot company. Their Makeblock Robot Starter Kit V2.0 looks like a good start at around $140 dollars. I have sent them an email hope to get a reply soon. In case this does not work, I will go for SK Pang electronics. My son will then have to specify what he wants as extras.

Thanks to all. Hopefully my son will continue with this interest! It is definitely a fascinating area.

    Keith

The MakeBlock kit is well made but the importing, duty etc adds at least 50+ percent on the price
