ISP for AtMega328 on Gertboard

Former Member
Former Member over 11 years ago

I have been looking at using the USBtinyISP from Adafruit for programming the Atmega328 chip on the

Gertboard. As the USBtinyISP has a level-shifter my thought is to power the target chip from the RPI

through J7 by setting a jumper connecting RPIs 3.3V and the 3.3V on the Gertboard.

The result is that all the LEDs on the Gertboard lights up.

Is this a desired behavior?

Is there a better way to power it?

the USBtinyISP is connected to the board via J23. My goal is to be able to use avr-gcc and avrdude to

program the Atmega328 chip from my laptop directly throught the USBtinyISP.

Thanks in advance.

Please only post one question in one forum if possible, thanks

    Now to your question

How are you connecting the ISP programmer to the 328, can you provide a wiring diagram or picture (Or Both) so we can better help you

    Thanks

    Peter

This is my setup. I have the jumper on the right in place on J7 to connect the RPis 3.3V to the 3.3V circuit on the Gertboard.

To get a 'Hello World' example I've connected PB5 to the output and jumper B1 in place to hopefully get LED1 to light up.

But putting in the jumper in J7 all the LEDs lights up.

I had a connection issue posting this question, so I didn't thought the first time went through.

    Hi,

I bought this board from Element 14 and facing the same problem, however there was no feedback yet since then. Would be grateful if someone advise.

    Hi,

There is a jumper on the USBtinyISP , JP3 that will supply 5V from the USB connector to the Gertboard ISP connector if the jumper is

connected or supply the USBtinyISP with 3.3V from the Gertboard if it is not. For the Gertboard this jumper should not be connected.

Not sure about the hookups on the Gertboard, but if it is the 6 pin programming port, chances are you are better off providing power to the chip separately. The programmer port does have v+ and gnd listed, however this is more for occasions where the chip is being programmed away from the circuit.  I do a similar operation with an Arduino Nano, and always plug the USB port in to provide power.
