Wolfson Audio Card+ ?

Former Member
Former Member over 11 years ago

Is the Wolfson card likely to be revised to fit a Raspberry Pi Model B+?

It may be possible to hack the current card and drivers to work on B+, but there is no way it will plug in as it was designed to on Model B.

There hasn't been much activity from Wolfson / Farnell/Element14 which hints that a new design is unlikely any time soon.

Does Model B+ effectively mark the death of the Wolfson card?

    Hi,

Yes, the card is being re-worked for the new B+.

Sorry, don't have details of timescales yet.

    Scott

It looks like the Wolfson audio card is available for the A+/B+:

The important question is: are there drivers and/or instructions how to get it to work?

great, thanks for the link to build a kernel with Wolfson audio card from scratch.

Are there any precompiled kernel images for recent raspbian version(s)?

In addition, are there any TFT/LCD/OLED display hats compatible with this Wolfson hat,

    for example https://www.sparkfun.com/products/13051 ?

That is the key question.  Drivers!  I'm just a few months away from waiting a year for them to get around to including the drivers in the official Raspian as has been promised for nearly a year.  I really don't want to have to mess with compiling my own drivers, especially every time there's a new kernel.  And I don't want to have to use an old, non upgradable, custom build Raspian snapshot.

Hoping Cirrus Logic (the new owners of Wolfson) see the value and quality workmanship that originally went into this card and complete the process with full integration into the upstream Raspian.

    Update:

I just stubled across the press release for the acquisition:  http://investor.cirrus.com/news-and-events/media-center/news-details/2014/Cirrus-Logic-Agrees-to-Acquire-Wolfson-Microelectronics/default.aspx?ICID=CirrusLogicAudio-topMain-pressrelease

It was April 2014.  So....one would have hoped by now they would have taken notice of this product and picked up where Wolfson dropped the ball but being Dec already, I'm losing faith.

Besides the software drivers, I see also another problem with this new card. It takes over the 40 pin GPIO header, and presents only 6 of them on its "expansion header". It seems that no SPI, I2C is available and instead of 26 - 28 pins I get only 6 pins for GPIO. But got instead a lot of audio outputs. Isn't it cool?
