OK. Sorry it took a little bit longer than two weeks to get around to this, but this worked for me, I have the display working, but I haven't toyed with the touchscreen, yet.
Boot into your normal rasbian image
type
sudo REPO_URI=https://github.com/notro/rpi-firmware BRANCH=master rpi-update
sudo reboot
After the system reboots, type
sudo modprobe fbtft_device custom name=fb_ili9341 gpios=reset:27,dc:22,led:18 speed=16000000 rotate=90 bgr=1
it may or may not enable the console on the display, but the important bit is, after that, type:
FRAMEBUFFER=/dev/fb1 startx
That got an X display on the screen for me.
Good luck,
Mike

I was able to plugin my logitech wireless mouse/keyboard and use the display. Seemed a little slow, but it functioned.
Still have to get around to the touch screen.
Mike
Here is the link for the original manufacturer's page 3.2 inch touch screen LCD for Raspberry Pi
That at least has the pinout.
Mike
One of those Router modules might be good for that task Peter as they are cheap and have a level of I/O built in !
The screen was so inexpensive it was hard to pass up. Sainsmart is bad about making other people's designs and not supporting it too well.
At any rate, it works now. I'm sure I'll get the touch working, I just literally stopped working on it today. I had to build a deck :-)
Mike
I managed to get the touchscreen working.
The proper commands were:
sudo modprobe ads7846 sudo modprobe ads7846_device gpio_pendown=17
Then I had to do a calibration, I looked at the instructions on adafruit for a similar screen and made the appropriate changes based on my hardware.
Works reasonably well.
Mike
I also sent an email to SainSmart and they sent me this link
https://s3-ap-northeast-1.amazonaws.com/sain-amzn/20/20-111-971/DVD-LCD.zip
I haven't downloaded it yet, but I may later. I presume it is the driver CD.
Mike
I wonder if those commands or a slight derivative will work on the RiOT board
I don't know. I do have some kind of goofy riot to pi adapter. I'm probably going to see if I can get it to work on the Odroid-c1, my new favorite.
Mike
Also, Peter, I don't think the fbtft modules come pre-built for any platform other than the Ras Pi. If I have some time this week I may look into that.
